The Ref Stop
FRA-SUI is sure giving it some competition! What a great day for Soccer!

I've sat in (practically) the same spot for the last 5 hours. Absolutely superb entertainment.

Despite my thoughts about the ref and some potential kpi calls, I think his overall handling of the game has been excellent

I thought that aspect was interesting. In the US, Clattenberg referred to a continuing foul, but this wasn't holding. While the first contact appeared outside the PA, the worst contact was inside.
A little on the right looked outside but then big to the left looked like on the line. I think pen. But I thought the convention was first contact... all we ask for is consistency;)

Justifiable by, first contact did not make it a foul if that contact was the only contact. It was the contact inside the PA that made it a foul.

Not sure why he needed VAR for the pen/foul, absolutely crystal clear
Even if the ref isn’t sure on in/out surely it was an easy whistle.
I am fairly certain the only reason he didn't blow was because the attacker got up and go on with it. A bug bear of mine. Same with diving. All this does is to encourage players to stay down and appeal or deliberately dive after being fouled (because if they don't, the referee doesn't give it).

I agree. I don't think players should be penalised for trying to stay on their feet. It just encourages them to go down all the time

Coming from South America, I can't blame the Ref. Player tries to play on after a foul in the PA..... Argentinian Referee enters 'cannot compute mode'

I was thinking something similar when Sommer saved the PK. In South America the keeper would have ran off and celebrating just to put the referee in the bad spot of having to break up the celebration.

If you look at the referee before the KFTPM he was pleading with them, I assumed he was talking about staying on the line so he didn't have to send them off, then perhaps he also made a point of waiting for check complete before celebrating.

I thought Makkelie had a solid first half. Orange-ish tackle by England towards the end of the half, but I thought yellow was right--but I don't think either call would have triggered VAR intervention. (Clattenberg helpfully agreed with the yellow citing lack of brutality and speed of the tackle.)
