Martin Keown as the voice of reason! 😮

He and Jonathan Pearce discussing the red and comments from the studio, and he (Keown) the only one to say he hopes player fouled is going to be all right.

Yeah, don’t worry about him pun-twits in the studio because the ball was what mattered 🙄

The Ref Stop
You could see the look of sadness on Orsato's face when he went to the monitor. He looked a lot like "Well there goes my chance at semifinal. How did I miss this?"
I'm not convinced the powers that be are unhappy with how this was handled. There seem to be a tendency to lean yellow and let VAR help upgrade--and he got the ultimate decision right. I'm not sure that will hurt his chances in any significant way.

Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force or endangers the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play, unless they got the ball.

Oh I found Lineker's version of the LOTG. It does have a key modification.

I seriously want to tweet Lineker right now and ask him exactly where in the Laws of the Game it says "getting the ball negates any foul."

It's. Not. In. There.

My immediate reaction real time was that it looked very dangerous, and obviously the replay shows just how dangerous it was. I do have sympathy for the defender as it was a complete accident, which you wouldn't realise by just looking at the still image, but it is still a red card.

Was always a big fan of Lineker when he was a player, but my view of him has diminished massively in recent years due to the utter garbage that come out of his mouth. I don't use twitter, but just did a search and he continues to try and claim it wasn't even a foul even when presented with the photographic evidence!:wall:

Look at the mean player in Blue coming into the Yellow player late and initiating the contact.

I've actually got some sympathy - Danielson has stretched to get the ball but Besedin is coming in at speed to challenge for the ball that's dropping; he's not even in shot in the clip. What is Danielson supposed to do? Just let the ball drop and bounce? Leave it for the incoming opponent to play it?

Well whatever he does he needs to not put his studs into his opponents knee. His opponent was running straight at him challenging for a ball that was dropping straight between them. The swedish player took a significant risk by lunging for that ball with his leg fully extended knees locked and studs a foot and a half to 2 ft off the ground. That led to him being sent off. He has every right to try to play the ball but he has to do so in a manner that does not risk putting an opponent in the hospital and ending their career.

I don't entirely disagree with you in the sense that there was some bad luck involved in how the timing played out, but you're really exaggerating.

They are only a few yards apart before the header towards them:

They are both closing to the landing spot as the ball comes down and the defender gets ready to lunge:

He gets to the ball because he lunged at the ball in a way that was dangerous to his opponent. That is his victim's leg in the picture as he goes into the lunge, not much farther from the ball than he is:

Is he unlucky in that other similar lunges don't take out an opponent's knee? Sure. But that kind of lunge near an opponent seems to me to be exactly the kind of play that the lunge language in Law 12 is designed to eliminate as it risks severe injury to opponents.
