The Ref Stop
I wonder if Oliver even thought there was contact to the head as he played on because surely he would of stopped play if he thought there was contact.

Would of been interesting if VAR would of intervened if palace scored which they almost did.

You don't really see much worse than that, not really sure how the officials missed that real time. I'm not sure if it was the foot to head that caused the injury, rather the keeper landing on Mateta as he was already on the floor. Either way though it was a shocker of a challenge.

Definitely foot the head. He was knocked out cold before hitting the floor.

Wow, I didn’t realise it took VAR to spot it. Think that is even more proof of what I’ve said a number of times and was mentioned by someone else; our officials are not good enough at identifying SFP

Did MO give any sanction whatsoever before VAR input? Surprising given the speed of the challenge and how high the leg was.

Bit of palace bias here I will admit 🤣

But I didn't think MO had one of his best games.

Has to see that first incident in real time I think. Lucky there's VAR in operation at this stage and that's the only thing that's saved him there!! Think it only took 1 look at it for him to give it at the screen.

Did come to a good decision for the 2nd palace goal. Went over and spoke to the assistant after initially disallowing it and they came to the right conclusion before VAR. Shame the commentators didn't properly pick up on this - seemed more interested in talking about the games he'd refereed this season and decisions in them.

Also thought one of the Milwall CB's was lucky not to be sent off for a second yellow towards the end of the game for a challenge on Nketiah. Probably 50/50 either way whether he got booked or didn't for it.

Let's hope the FA give a fairly lengthy suspension for that awful challenge!

Had a Millwall fan (old school) at my game today. He asked what gk is meant to do. I explained that I understand that there was no intent but it had to be a red card.

Doesn’t matter if you get the ball or not - just so dangerous.

MO gave Arsenal's MLS a red card for glancing trip but failed to even give a foul for studs to the head.

I'm genuinely shocked he missed that.

He must not of seen the contact with the studs on the head and unless we were right in Michael Olivers position then we will never know if he saw that or not, giving it would seem he gave no sanction would suggest he just didn't see it but maybe the linesman could of.

I think in fairness to the referee, it was a glancing contact with the studs but still dangerous play. I think if it was a full on force in the face then the referee has no excuses.

VAR
As some members might have sensed over the years. It's an absolute scourge on the game IMO
I cannot accept that MO (or the ARs or 4O) would fail to dismiss the GK for GBH if VAR wasn't refereeing the game
I cannot accept that our best referee (team) are capable of missing that. Our best cannot be capable of that. It surely is not possible

Given that he didn't even stop play at all I'm pretty sure he didn't see the contact. Even when he did stop play he wasn't exactly quick to get treatment on, I really think he didn't realise the keeper had made any contact. I know we've had this debate about whether referees rely on VAR, but this was such a serious act I just can't see any referee thinking that way. It has made one of the top referees in the world look incompetent, there's no way he would intentionally do that.

The answer is obvious, head it rather than kick it. This wasn't some short forward he kicked in the head, Mateta is 6'4, I couldn't even get my foot that high without doing myself a serious injury.

Was certainly my first thought when I saw it live. Why come out and kick it at that height? It's above head height so surely would've been a lot safer heading it away and probably winning a foul from colliding with Mateta

I don’t think he’s opted to ignore it and let VAR intervene. I just think it’s a completely unacceptable error. The higher echelons have definitely got a major issue when it comes down to defining SFP
