Whilst I agree Oliver isn't having his best season, people way more qualified than you or I must be happy with him as he is still getting big games from both PGMOL and UEFA. Referees can go through bad spells, just as players do, but that doesn't take away from him being one of the top referees England has ever produced. He dropped an absolute clanger yesterday, fortunately one that VAR was able to correct, but most referees do throughout their career.

What are the official qualifications for a referee selector? Because it looks like an old boys' club from here.

The "Well he must be doing something right if he keeps getting the games" argument is just lazy. Why even have a forum then.
As a Man Utd fan having to watch the worst GK in the EPL every week let me assure you being picked every week is no marker of performance.
Referee and players are picked by humans. Humans have their biases and a lot don't like to rock the boat.

All anyone has said is he's having a bad season, which you agree to but still feel the need to be very protective of him.
Not your first time doing this with MO.
I can only assume you know him IRL in which case, please control your bias.

The qualifications vary depending on competition and level. Certainly isn't an old boy club in England as there are observers operating at senior levels that never got beyond L5, they have worked their way up through the pyramid based on the quality of their observations. FIFA and UEFA is different and the observers are usually ex-senior level referees.

I haven't been protective of Oliver, I've criticised the mistake on Saturday as much as anyone, and have said that he is struggling and not having a great season. But equally he hasn't been "rubbish", and is still an elite referee, somewhat timely he has just been appointed to the Champion's League last 16 game between Bayern and Leverkusen. Pretty sure UEFA don't appoint referees to that level of a game that have had rubbish seasons.

I think he needs a break, & said that after his family was threatened, he is only human.

Most of us work & have time off from work too get completely away from the pressures of the job. Does a top PGMOL referee get any time off between July & May & even when they do would still be monitored for fitness during that time.

He can’t have slept that well recently, is MO just burnt out/worn out/worn down?

63 top matches (plus VAR duties) in 12 months including off season, he has my sympathy & admiration.

Over the last 12 months Michael Oliver has refereed 46 games, comprising 27 Premier League games, 7 Champions League games, 2 Nations League games, 1 Club Friendlies 3game, 2 Europa League games, 4 European Championshipgames, 1 Conference League game, 1 FA Cup game and 1International Friendlies game. In addition he has been the Fourth Official 17 times.

A ridiculas number really, people moan about player burnout but what about referees with the running around, training, travelling etc.

As I said in my previous post, at least PGMOL has got somewhat a bigger pool of SG1 refs and games are being distributed more evenly than in the past but Oliver has still refereed 21 games out of 28 match rounds.

His form has dipped from his usual high standards and no doubt the red card debacle has made things even worse with the OTT reaction we saw from that.

I wonder if this will happen.
Standard ban doesn't seem appropriate.
I'm trying to think of a more dangerous "challenge" post 2000 in the UK and can only think of that scumbag Ben Thatcher

What's really annoying me today, is pundits and supporters that are saying "im sure he didn't mean to hurt Mateta" etc. Well sorry, that's rubbish ! If you attempt to play a ball that high with your foot, you know full well it could make contact with his head and cause a nasty injury.
It’s like the standard ‘he’s not that type of player’, which I saw Eddie Howe quoted as saying in regards to Gordon’s red card.

Those type of quotes can get in the bin…..along with ‘what football expects’

Added to that is referees don't get to travel home on private jets or executive coaches like players do, more often than not they will be driving themselves home. Speak to any sports scientist or physio and they will tell you that driving a long distance after intensive exercise is a really bad idea.

It is something of a moot point. He is their cup keeper so won't play again this season unless the first choice keeper gets injured. If he gets a 3 game standard ban he won't play again this season, if he gets an extended 10 game ban he won't play again this season, the only difference will be he can't sit on the bench as a back up.

Exactly ! Well, might not have been previously, but he is that type of player now. As for the calls for him to be eligible for the Carling Cup Final (because it's a different competition), well that doesn't wash either. He knew what the suspension rule is and shouldn't have been so stupid
