The Ref Stop

England v Argentina

Thats now 9 fouls against Argentina..

Then eventually card comes and its for us (ironically, I dont disagree with it but based on the game so far, why?)..

The Ref Stop
Not watching the game while at work, but comments here and on the US-based forum are pretty consistent.

This is who Elfath is. Tries to manage players, and usually succeeds. But managing Argentina is a totally different deal. On this side of the pond, we usually laud his management skills but scratch our heads at some foul selection and technical lapses. But he sometimes is far from play and doesn’t like to use cards early. That makes him a really good option in FIFA’s eyes. It’s a vastly different style of officiating compared to Barton’s style.
He’s close to losing control, his style not recommended for new referees 😂

Genuinely interesting insight - thank you,

FIFA's tactics of keeping the card count have backfired (unless the tactics are to favour Argies, and I'm not going there), because maybe we wouldn't have had 19 fouls in the first half if FIFA (via the Ref) are saying 'anything goes'
It's backfired because it's made for an xG of 0.05 v 0.03 which I doubt I've ever seen before

As for 3 minutes added, I don't know what that's all about. Hydration break 3 mins plus umpteen confrontations. Presumably too long without an advert
He's been weak with Argentina, the irony of the first caution going to England to a plyers who'd been fouled 5 times
Anyway, not ref's fault despite the dubious aiding of Argie tactics

I did not like the antics by any player at half time around the ref even if it was probably needed to air frustrations..
But especially don't like telling everyone (even ushering Bellingham away) but inviting Messi to stay for a nice cosy chat.

I thought the referee has done okay, yes Simone could have a yellow for persistent fouling but both yellow cards are correct for me and whilst it's been a bit niggly and a few handbags, there has not been anything way too aggressive as of yet.
