The Ref Stop

England v Argentina

The Ref Stop
No keeper saves that, and I was a keeper and a keeper coach, it was past him before he had a chance.
He's out of position as he needed to adjust to see the ball. Pickford is poor on long shots. That's always been his weekness
His distribution is phenomenal, hence he keeps his position unconditionally. Pope likely saves without hardly diving, but his size 13 feet would cause infinitely more problems. Anyway, no blaming the keeper he was unsighted and happily we got humiliated by the opposition and not the officials

Same as last night, the referee wasn't perfect but he got the key decisions correct. I knew exactly what was going to happen, Argentina would commit multiple minor fouls and get away with it, then England would get the first caution. Which is exactly what happened, but Anderson made it impossible for him not to be cautioned.

England going out certainly has no correlation to the referee's performance.

Goalkeepers' Union..
Ah, Pickford's stats from outside the box are poor, but no matter, he had a decent tournament but maybe Tuchel should think about revving up the negativity in future by bringing on a second GK in future and taking off a winger

We were dog sh1te at the end of the day. Losing mentality evident everywhere from that opening goal and the manager played an enormous part in the defeat

I won't lose a wink of sleep, The only time it bothers me is when I sense foul play. Never upsets me when the side I'm supporting gets played off the pitch.
Argies were better than us in every respect, including their disruptive tactics - brilliant nowse by them. All the best teams can do it. We can't
Very poor considering the average age of the players and commercial value of the two squads. Really, very poor indeed
Thought the ref was decent. Must be difficult with all his FIFA instructions. No complaints whatsoever about the officials. Nice work
We was sliced apart repeatedly after that first goal

Well thank f… that’s over. Now I can deal with the really stressful stuff. Like will I actually have a job at the end of this bs restructuring we’re dealing with ?

And what actually happens on a picket line as I’m on strike officially for the first time ever tomorrow. 🤔
Best of British @Tealeaf 🙏

Gorra say, I ain't too fussed
It would wind me up if we got robbed, but we didn't, our negative approach and countless defenders got humped by the better team
No doubt the German will keep his job as the FA are dull as dishwater, but it was so very very negative after scoring the opener out of the blue
We have the commercially more valuable squad, nut you'd never ever know it
One of the reasons I was relaxed about this WC is that, talent wise, we were barely top eight. Doesn’t make tonight anything other than heartbreaking - we were by far the better team in the first half - but we didn’t show up in the second.

Hugely disappointing, but for once… nobody to blame.
It seems Argentina don’t begin to play until they’re behind, but once they went behind they were comfortably better and unlucky not to score sooner.
Elfath played a risky game but it worked perfectly for him I thought.

I thought the referee was poor (based on LotG) but 100% agree his decisions - or lack thereof - influenced his he outcome.
Very harsh by saying the Referee was poor even based on the LotG. Did he stick rigidly to the Laws of the game throughout - no, but that doesn’t mean to say his performance under that heading was poor. Did he miss any mandatory offences that would require a caution - no. Did he attempt to allow the game to flow & manage incidences to the temperature of the game without being over fussy whilst still being in control - yes. Did he administer yellow cards to the right players at the right times - overall yes. Not perfect, but in view of the enormity of the game etc, I thought he did very well.

@Big Cat Agree with naivety and lack of nous. These sides know the referee will be looking to keep cards in pocket, and will do the niggling fouls all games.
Fatigue massively catches him with with your been kicked in the calf a few times.
Even when England get round the referee it's far too polite.

Actually thought they did it well first 20 minutes by giving it back to Messi, who was completely anonymous until we gifted him the freedom of the wing.

Dan Burn saying it 'human nature' to drop back when in the lead was hugely telling for me.

Risky game is exactly what I thought. I think traditional refereeing would have expected cautions in the first 10 minutes, and lets face it he had opportunities to do so. He somehow got through it though.

Did he miss?

Well, yes. At least one delaying restart, one red for sub delaying opponent’s restart, reckless yellow for Fernandez, reckless yellow for Simeone, how many yellows do you want for “only the captain.”

If I was being observed by my local sensei, he’d have me at 5 missed yellows and a missed red.

Of course, Fifa have moved with the goalposts with the world cup of chaos refereeing so maybe the law book will be rewritten so these aren’t mandatory anymore.

Can't blame the referee though if that is what his bosses are telling him to do.

As a very frustrated England fan I thought he was fine, way better than I thought he was going to be.

I accept your points, though my rationale is based upon what has been often adopted in this World Cup. As to your local sensei, if he/she penalised you for 5 missed yellows & a missed red, that would have been very harsh too imo - though if it was me, I would want you to talk me through at least a few of the reasons for the outcomes.
