Open Age First a cheat, now blind

The one word I dislike is "cheat." Players may doubt my eyesight or my refereeing abilities. But I will never tolerate them doubting my neutrality.

Oldest active referee in your league/county?

I once refereed my sons team in a friendly. During the second half I awarded his team a penalty, and my son said, "Good decision Dad..." That went down well..!!!

    Very Interesting article

Don't start me on personal hearings. I am not questioning the players right to one, just the way they are held. We send in our reports, and then have to justify them in front of a committee who tend to doubt the validity of our reports.

Oldest active referee in your league/county?

I am 62 now, and have been officiating for 33 years. While I am not the oldest active referee in Leicestershire, there are not many older than me. And yes it does get much more difficult as the years go by.

    Very Interesting article

There are not enough referees at grassroots level as it is, so while it would be nice if officials were in teams, but it will not happen.

Open Age Free kick incident that almost happened

Agreed, but you would be surprised how many players do not know that.

    Absolutely fuming

I would be inclined to contact your county assessor co-ordinator. And without being critical of the assessor, show the co-ordinator the assessment you received, and ask him to consider whether it was a reasonable assessment, particularly as there was only one positive comment.

    Very Interesting article

I say this with the greatest of trepidation, but I fear that one day a referee will be killed following violence inflicted upon him/her by a player or club official. Action needs taking now, and not punitive action either. Our match officials need protecting from violence.

    Water bottle goal

If the ball did not cross the line, then a goal cannot be awarded.

Yet another one of "those games"!

I would have given the first one a straight red, irrespective of whether he was already on a yellow. If a player refuses to leave the pitch, then it is easy. Inform both captains you are abandoning the game unless the dismissed player leaves the pitch. And as was mentioned, make sure you...

Open Age Free kick incident that almost happened

I am with Dan on this one. Get the wall back, and tell the keeper it is on the whistle. They should know if it is direct or indirect, but I generally tell them just in case they are unsure. If they score award an indirect free kick to the defending team, and make it clear why you have disallowed...

    Hamstring

An update Gents, after a month of rest, I did a game this morning. I must be honest and admit I did no sprinting, I just eased myself into it. I had a fifteen minute warm up and felt OK. Thankfully I had no reaction so maybe the injury has cleared up. Will I be OK to start sprinting again next...

    Must be a record?

Apparently I have been useless in all my games so far...!

    Players Favourite Sayings #2

The classic comment that I am sure we have all heard. "Is this your first game ref?"

    My two penneth....

Social media has got more than one referee in hot water. I use it for harmless banter, and not for serious issues regarding referees.

    Players Favourite Sayings #2

Probably my favourite is when a side feel decisions are not going their way. And some bright spark will say " Even they are laughing at you."

    Hamstring

Thanks for the input Gents. I do not get any discomfort when walking, but if I try to stretch I can feel it pulling. When it went on Saturday, there were still 60 minutes left. I did continue, but only at a gentle jog combined with walking. I told both team managers at half time about the...

SM's question of the week: #1

We are not there to have an easy game. We are there to enforce the laws of the game correctly. Hopefully we have games where things go well, but that does not mean they are easy. The harder you work the more rewards you will get from your games.

    Hamstring

I have been a referee for over 30 years, and have been fortunate to have had very few injuries, however two weeks ago I felt a slight pull on my hamstring. I rested it for a week, and thought it was ok, but it went again on Saturday. I have never had a hamstring injury before, and wondered how...
