The Ref Stop

Sin Bins - 17/18 Season

The Ref Stop
So if I understand correctly basically means a yellow card shown for dissent (player sin binned) is effectively no card at all!

This has recipe for disaster, confusion, conflict and aggravation written all over it! :wall::redcard::brb::mad:

The fact that a sin bin is not the same as a caution is hardly the most confusing aspect of the laws of the game. It's just unfamiliar (for now).

Not so sure. As it reads currently - temp dismissal + reckless tackle - stays on fop. Reckless tackle + temporary dismissal - off but returns after 10 mins.
2 temp dimissals - can come back after 1st one, can't come back after 2nd one, but sub can ....after 10 minutes.

2 x yellow cards - say delaying restart, tactical handball - off you go for early shower.

To deny that this won't cause more than a little confusion is a little optimistic I think!

And what's wrong with the current system of two cautions = one dismissal? Is that too simple or too hard? Why change?

It's neither too simple nor too hard, but that doesn't mean it's perfect. Maybe it can be improved.

I think this idea might reduce dissent. It's true it might not, and also true it might cause other problems, but I think it's worth trying.

One thing it definitely isn't is too complicated. The offside law is much more difficult to understand and yet we all seem to have grasped that.

New for 17/18 from @Ross - get your orders in early as there is limited supplies. Ideal for controlling the Temporary sin bins..

Currently in development by IFAB and the FA - coming as an app on your apple watch for Xmas. Just what every new referee wants !

Unfortunately I'm with @Padfoot @PP62 and others who have raised concerns I don't like sin bins at grassroots especially for lone referees keep it to the £10 and a great idea from a fellow colleague on Facebook if they keep dissenting give them a course they have to go on and if they don't go they don't get to play until they do

Games with a fourth official or neutrals would see this work, absolutely. The junior line in a team of 3 could note times etc and let ref know when 10 is up. Senior probably has enough on his plate.

Grassroots is absolutely the wrong place to trial this.

I've changed my stance on this.... I don't like it!

Too confusing, two cautions and you can still carry on playing or be substituted?

Good idea in principle... Absolutely rubbish wording and means of compliance. If you receive two yellows, you should be gone.

So last night was the League meeting of the local league i sit on the committee for, 50 club secretaries were in attendance. We mentioned that we have been asked if we wish to take part in the pilot and that we would be asking for opinions via email in the next few weeks.

We asked for some brief feedback from the clubs and not 1 person seemed to be in favour of it, not 1.

In that case I might do more games on that league next season! I only did 2 this season so that won't be difficult!

if you receive two yellows, you should be gone.

You would be gone (but you can be subbed). Your team have already been down to 10 men for 20 minutes. That's not as bad as being down to 10 men for the rest of the match (assuming there's more than 20 minutes left) but the first card was far worse than it would have been previously.

In 6 years and about 200 games I've dismissed a player for 2 yellows for dissent once. So this is a bit of a non-issue.

I agree with the second part...
But for the first part, if a player has received 2 yellow cards (dissent), he should be sent off. He shouldn't be replaced!

How hard can it be?
The average uneducated coach/parent on the sidelines will be screaming blue murder as to why you have done a Graham Poll and yellow carded a player 3 times and yet he/she hasn't been red carded and is now being substituted!:mad::wall:
