If knobhead is acceptable to shout at the AR, where is the line of unacceptable?
Taking the literal definition of acceptable (as in what we can accept / live with as opposed to it being perfectly fine), I would draw the line at discrimination (or comments making reference to a protected characteristic), or as very validly pointed out above, something threatening

The Ref Stop
Maybe this is just an English thing, but my best mates call me a knobhead. It's not going to upset me to the point of stopping a football match to get a spectator booted out.
Fair enough, but there is a difference between something said in a jokey way in private to a close personal friend and something shouted in a public and provocative manner at a complete stranger.

Not saying that it's necessarily enough to stop a game for, but you're comparing apples and oranges.

In a world of paying spectators, I’d entirely expect negative / unfavourable comments to be coming in the direction of both match officials AND players (usually, but not always, opposition players!). I see no reason why match officials should get any greater protection than the players do in this regard. As such, I’m in the camp with others on here who see the line as being drawn at anything discriminatory or threatening.

As said above… I was saying that part in jest 🙄

Few things I wanted to know that you dont get from the video...

How much of the game has been played?
The context of it?
Most importantly.... how many other times has the spectator abused the assistant prior to this event?

I get the feeling there’s more to this video than meets the eye. There’s absolutely no way that assistant hasn’t been called that, or something much worse, at any other game. That’s just the nature of refereeing unfortunately. So either he’s reacting this way all the time or something else has gone on … or he’s been the perfect assistant throughout his career

Its part of the game at that level, people pay their money and voice their opinion. I am a fan of football as well as a ref, and sometimes things get to you. I have seen at matches when AR have got a number of key decisions wrong. Fans will get upset and shout things, but lets be honest 99% of the time its just that, just shouting things and they go away and have a little moan but thats the end of it.

At grassroots a little different as most of the time you are on your own and a lot of the assaults etc happen at that level so things need to be put in place. Although I am a Port Vale fan and we sadly had some idiot chase the ref (although on that day, the ref in question had a shocker, not saying he was right in anyway to chase the ref, but I understand the reason.)

I'm sorry but this never understandable.

It very much depends on what is shouted. I do think any referee who wants to progress beyond L5 needs to have a thick skin as they will inevitably get things shouted at them. And if it is from people the other side of the pitch perimeter barrier there isn’t a lot you can do about it. Unless …

.. it crosses a line, if it becomes threatening, and certainly if it becomes discriminatory, it is not acceptable. Doesn’t matter how much they have paid, or how bad the officials have been, it is not OK. I reported someone sitting next to me at Hillsborough a couple of years ago to a steward as what he was shouting was clearly racist. Without him knowing a steward and a police officer had moved to just behind him in the aisle, once he did it again he was arrested. The person in question had witnessed a truly awful refereeing performance (there were 4 KMDs and 3 were wrong), he had paid a lot of money as tickets at Hillsborough are amongst the most expensive outside of the EPL, but he still couldn’t do what he did.

How would that work if he got to ref at a professional level ? How do you tell 5,000 Millwall supporters to stop swearing ?

Silly comment. At the professional level it’s a different game, and I’d expect club stewards or the police if needed would deal with anyone who goes too far.
