The outcome doesn't sit right with me, finds himself over the hoardings accidentall, gets pushed, has a few words (as anyone would) then comes back. I can only assume the officials saw something that didn't happen otherwise it sets a president that could see fans engaging with players to get them booked/sent off.

The Referee Store
If it was only that he'd had a few words, I'd be with you. But he took it upon himself to climb back up and commit AA against a (vile) spectator.
Had he stayed down at pitch level and said a few words I doubt he'd have been booked.

We need seperate our personal thoughts here from our duties as a match official

kinda the same as if a pitch invader runs on and a player leathers him...bye bye player

The moment the player here goes in for round two with the fan, its a yellow

inexcusable he got ( assualted?) by a fan, yes

but the referee is entrusted to deal with misconduct from the players, and, has (whether we like the outcome), dealt correctly with the situation,

Ok its easy to sit watching the incident and remove the human instincts from the players act, can we understand his actions, yes
would we when playing do the same, yes/maybe
is it appalling to see the player get shoved in the first place, yes

none of which negates or nullifies our responsibility as a match official to deal correctly with the player. Regardless of the provication, incitement, the player is simply not permitted to behave like that.
Get shoved, give the boy the eye, even make a scene of it demanding ref or security get involved, fine. Take retribution yourself, not fine.

I don't think his actions are serious enough for a sanction. We're rewarding the fans behaviour cautioning. Imo football absolutely does not expect a card here.

look at the fans charging from all angles to comfront the player as the player comfronts the instigator.

here is your one on one.
followed by a crowd surge, safety issue, caused by the players reaction to the 'fan'

With the upmost sympathy, and indeed admiration for the player fo not lashing out, he simply must be cautioned.

Fan has caused that in its entirety imo

Every club has idiots (very kind word) and we see them here

Whats more, match commander brief in this game in this country is

" anything within those white lines is yours, anything outwith them is ours unless you deal with it for us"

emphasis on the very deliberate use of the word, ' anything'

In short, the referee has absoutely no option but to card, for reasons within and importantly outwith the lotg. As we read frequently on here, elite referees manage an occasion, not just a football match.

if in turn the powers that be wish to overturn the sanction, thats entirely their perogative.

Still not seeing anything worthy of a caution

Cannot agree that what the player did is in any way worthy of a caution. I get the aggressive attitude aspect but its just not enough for me. Anyway...hardly likely to convince each other at this stage it seems

what am trying to say is, ' worthy of a caution' is taken out of our hands as referee here by the manadory instruction from the law of the land that the referee must deal with players actions off the field of play,
its the pime example of being entrusted to oversee a top league fixture and alli it entails, over us giving a foul throw at our 15s game this afternoon,

yc here, it be a minor talking point for a day. Because its led to a red, its news.

Why does it need to be a caution?

Why does it need to be a caution?

Because the player ( provoked or not) has caused a crowd surge ( as shown in the stills),
Its a safety issue and becomes a matter for the police and stewards UNLESS the referee is seen to deal with it,
And am purely talking the players involvement here, not the fans.
Its a straightforward yc and a ' dont react with the fans please"

which in this case happens to be his second.

Fans caused and provoked that imo

again, diff between us this afternoon, and top league football.

I just don't buy that. If the ref has a word with the player nothing happens, there's no reaction from the opposition or the fans. I want to see an obvious aggressive action here and there isn't one.

Has a word? the horse has already bolted, the player has reacted, to a fan, its caused a crowd surge, we now have our sanction

anyway seen this played over till cows come home over the years, caution stands and players are reminded not to engage with fans, clubs are reminded if their responsibility re fans inciting players.

Certainly in England the stewards will have escorted the fan out of the stadium too. Probably a football banning order to follow.

This guy left minutes after the incident, off his own back
Absolutely he will not be back in that stadium, thats a given, as a minimum
