L'arbitre Blog - Week 40
If last week was busy, this was the craziest of the past four years. Not really refereeing-related. I didn’t sleep three nights this week which was brand new to me. Do I say I’m busy every week? I hope not because this one was really busy. Only two games were scheduled for this week but negligible travel. Wednesday The crew was coming from a ways so while they were travelling, I had my pre-match meal, did a job interview and finished writing a paper. They picked me up early and the drive down the road was funny given that it was almost no distance at all but nice to arrive together and for me to chat with them before arrival. The weather was quite chilly. We stood outside watching the prior game for a bit before heading back...
L'arbitre Blog - Organisation: Game Journal
Another post in the organisation series. To be a referee, you need to be organised and keep a journal of your games (or a game log). Note down all relevant details of games in case your Football Association asks to see your activity for the season or for upgrading purposes. It’s also good to keep a record to reminisce. It is also known as a game log or diary. Here is a template for anyone to use for their game journal: Game Journal I recently wanted to change the format of my game journal to make it easier to record (like the Excel file above) so I had to code a script to get it going. Here’s some of my design details. I pulled up some interesting stats on how many different officials I had worked with, the official I had worked...
L'arbitre Blog - Week 38
I felt quite stiff for most of the week. Both body and muscles stiff so I didn’t do anything very physically active. I had my assignor responsibilities for the Futsal league to tend to and development strategies for referee education. That’s about to pick up. I was also busy a lot during the week with conference calls with a few referees I hadn’t chatted with elsewhere for a long-time. It was a good time to catch up. The ref family and the number of connections become so large and widespread that it’s hard to stay in touch with everyone often. The only games I had scheduled was during the weekend and the top item I had to tend to was cleaning my flags. They had become smelly. Luckily the b&d flags could be taken apart and I gave...
L'arbitre Blog - Week 37
The first day of the week was a couple of Mens recreational games with my instructor who I took my referees course with. It had been a while since I had seen him so it was definitely nice. That’s a lie. I was super excited about it. It was only the second time in four years I had seen him. I was brought up and taught both in my youth and early years of refereeing with a simple phrase/saying. Never forget your roots. This has been a key idea throughout my refereeing; in crediting and acknowledging people who have helped me as well as refereeing games at the grassroots. I also got a very nice gift to add to the top of my reading list! I set out early from home and met up with my instructor in the neighbouring town. Luckily there...
L'arbitre Blog - FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2014-2015
I think I am rather late to the party with this post because I’m sure it came out a while ago but FIFA.com’s re-structuring threw me off for a few months. The FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game latest edition came out. A bulk of football’s amendments over the past few years made to the LOTG was incorporated in this round to the FLOTG and we have a new cover photo from the Futsal World Cup 2012 Thailand. Not to mention a new design choice for the pages was selected making it a nice change for readers. Check out the new cover photo! There is a bulk of changes to read up on that mostly impacts stakeholders at the international levels rather than the grassroots however there are significant changes to the sport as a whole. Here is the memo...
L'arbitre Blog - Week 36
No games during the week. No training either. I decided that it would be good to have a full 5 days with no intense physical activity involving the legs other than generally walking. It was also a major transition in schedule as I moved from work to classes so it was useful to slow things down. I’ve had plenty of reflection on match control and how it has affected certain games throughout my career that have been memorable. It will be interesting to try out some new techniques when I next have the chance. All the action was the weekend. Saturday was a return to action and I was raring to go and get a good run in. I got ready in everything but the suit jacket. The referee picked me up and it was another game in close proximity. It...
L'arbitre Blog - Week 35
A fellow referee and I, went to play some FIFA. Needless to say he was destroyed the first game since he wasn’t used to the console. He improved over the last few games but I was the overall winner! After the games, it was time to officiate some real games. I was doing some recreational womens games over the long weekend. It was a fairly quiet game overall. It was one of those games where I needed to maintain a high level of focus and concentration to ensure I didn’t miss anything because a minute switched off is all it takes. I also worked with a personable crew. Tuesday and Wednesday were break days so I used Wednesday evening for some light jogging. On a side note, my running loop was meant to drop off gamesheets in the...
L'arbitre Blog - Week 34
Monday off because I was moving. Do you know how stressful moving is? This was part one of the first move I was making. Second part was the next day and the second move on Friday. A fellow referee helped me out and I was able to move half my belongings to a temporary spot. Tuesday I had another exhibition game with the same home team exactly one week after the previous. The moving the two hours before was heavy-lifting and I was relieved I had everything done before my game. I certainly didn’t need a warm-up after it. I was fully moved out by then. All these shelves had my ref stuff on them. I found the dressing room and got changed quickly before the rest of my crew arrived and we went out to the field awaiting the field...
