Bear with me on this one.....

Following on from the recent ‘mong’ debate, another word was mentioned as an automatic red card......’faggot’.

And I tend to agree.....at least I did until listening to Radio 2 this morning.

They played Fairytale of New York.....which contains the line ‘you scumbag you maggot you cheap lousy faggot’

Now normally any unacceptable words are replaced by a sound gap......however, to my knowledge, this song has never had that word censored......which begs the question, why?

And, if it’s acceptable on public broadcast radio, should it really be an automatic red on a football pitch?

One is the words to a fantasy song, made up for pure enjoyment, for record sales and probably go as far as to say it's a lot of people's fav Xmas song.
If it's used on your pitch, I doubt it follows the above logic, it's an insult, one with homophobic connections and one which is offensive

I also think you already know this but wish to reignite an old flame too.
 
I'm strong believer of context. But I am stuggling to think of any context this would not be a 🍒. Nonetheless I will make a decision based on the circumstances if I ever hear it.

That word is also key, along with others to an entire box set I have, both the Uk and the USA editions, its essential to the storyline
As above, if its required to be used whilst partaking in a sporting event, am lost as to how
 
Back to the song ... in addition to 'faggot' it also contains 'slut' and I have heard it on TV and radio both with and without these words edited. I wouldn't consider either word as socially acceptable but their use is in keeping with the atmosphere and context of the song.
 
Radio One used to sensor both 'Faggot' and 'Slut' but got absolutely hammered with complaints for it so they eventually backed down.
 
My problem is why does this forum censor **** (sh!t) but doesn't sensor faggot or slut?

But in the context of the song, it is used in a derogatory manner, as an insult.....so in other words used in exactly the same way that it would be on a football pitch......

Yet one is offensive and one isn’t?

Massive case of having cake and wishing to consume it.......
 
As a gay man, I personally am not offended by words, least of all faggot - but my high tolerance for offence does not mean it’s not an offensive word; it is. I would implore every ref who hears it used on the pitch to dismiss said player - it’s offensive, insulting and often abusive.

Agree with Padfoot on this one though - have always found it odd that the radio plays it.
 
There are millions of uncensored songs that contain offensive lyrics that are not censored.

Again, what is “acceptable” elsewhere is not necessarily acceptable in the football field.

(I used to study lyrics and lecture on it, so forgive my high horse on this one) in this song the meaning can arguably be read as ironic or pastiche or social commentary. There are plenty of “get outs” in art to avoid censure and avoid accusations of bigotry, mysoginy, homophobia etc.

However, I think the world has changed. Football, in as much as we are mandated to apply the LotG, is well ahead of the media on this. Even though football is still full of disgusting behaviour and language it also (sometimes) gets appropriately disciplined.

The sad thing for me is I love music and lyrics but I think music and the media in general are light years behind ($$$) dealing with offensive and abusive language. In fact the music business is built on monetizing misoginy and homophobia.

And we just don’t need it. Stick it on the top shelf and in the brown paper bag where it belongs.

I think it’s become normalized, especially because of US cultural dominance amongst other things. But the world has moved on.

JayZ does not need to call Beyonce “young ho” in the middle if their greatest duet. He’s a poet, he could do much better.

Has my attitude in this changed since I had 3 girls. Oh yes. One day will Spotify have to put a lot more behind an adult wall? I hope so. Will radio stations be forced to play p***y hole this and b***h that after 9pm. I hope so.

Would it be fair to say, if its not considered acceptable to call someone (insert whatever) at your work
then its not acceptable to call someone it on the pitch either?

I hate being called Sir ! Sadly I cant justify a red card for it on the spot! my normal reply is, "am not your teacher, please call me xxxxxxxxxxxx"
