It clearly impacted on the ability of the opponent to play the ball.

It doesn’t say in the laws that the opponent must definitely have been about to play the ball or definitely able to play the ball or that the ball had to have been in playing distance.

If an attacker PIOP blocks a defender who is moving towards the ball it’s offside, even if the ball is not in playing distance or another player might get there first.

A very fine technicality in offside law. No offside for me.

It only at this very minute moment (the pic) that offside has to be considered as he becomes active in an offside position (not before it*). Has he violated any of the four "interfering with an opponent" clauses?

- Not obstructing vision
- Not challenging for the ball
- not attempting to play the ball
- Courtois had no 'ability to play the ball' at that very moment or later so no impact/interference on his ability to play the ball.

Beyond the four bullets, Law 11 also provides:

Here, the OSP attacker made physical contact with the GK that interfered with the GK's movement to the ball. That kept the GK from being as close as he wanted to challenge for the ball. I think OS is the correct call here. (Whether it is clear and obvious in a way that VAR should have interfered is, in my mine, a separate question.)

(I have heard elsewhere from a source that I hae found reliable in the past that UEFA has instructed referees that physical contact in the GA with the GK should always be called interference with the opponent. I cannot independently verify that.)
 
Key point for me was that physical interfence was before the header. At the instance of the header Courtois was already in a position where he couldn’t challenge for the ball.

It's a binary decision (like offside), clear and obvious doesn't apply. Checking for a possibility of handball as well.

Let's just hope they learn from this and have cameras in line with the touchlines in future!

In reality, you're right. From multiple unconvincing camera angles - it's an opinion.

It won't be too hard to modify GLT to be used for every in out decision and hopefully eventually for every factual decision like offside. Just like with everything else, lt's a matter of how much money they want to spend .

:eek: Soccer should invest in that because touch line decisions like that will even be subject to VAR how often? Can anyone think of another VAR review of whether a ball was in touch? Can only happen if a goal is scored in that phase of play. (I can think of one involving a goal line, but no other one involving a touch line.)

I think the reason we get the delay is that it is objective--if you're the VAR, you don't want to stop your review and see the highlights on TV that night that show it was out, so you want to get the best image. But I agree that it took way, way too long.

This logic would have meant we would have no GLT in the game. All you need for it to happen in the world cup once and they will get technology to fix it.

Oh and it's football :P
 
Utter tosh...in and out of play has to be left to the officials on the field with the exception of the two bits between the sticks......

If we're going to be accurate, soccer is a term that was coined in England and has been used there (on and off) ever since. The name of Sky Sports' regular Saturday show is ...... "Soccer Saturday." Similarly, the title of George Best's annually-published book about the sport in the late 60's and early 70's was, "George Best's Soccer Annual."
