The Ref Stop

Notts County v Chesterfield

I have been reading over the course of the past few months that fans generally consider Referees in L2 to be poor - not that I believe anything a fan thinks since they generally wear rose dinted & biased glasses favouring the team they support. However, I have visited Notts County to see them play their Home games against Bristol Rovers with Ross Joyce in the middle and tonight’s Semi Final 2nd leg against Chesterfield with Thomas Parsons in charge (until he got injured with 10 mins plus stoppage time left & had to come off). Both were in full control of the game, always up with play & in credible positions to see everything that was going on. Both were also very calm & didn’t fall for player theatricals when going to ground too easily. They may have both missed a thing or two, but overall, top performances from both Referees who were under pressure from the magnitude of the game for both clubs.

You don’t get to that level unless you are a very, very good referee. Some will obviously be better than others, but you’d have to assume those getting play off games will be amongst the top performing.

We’ve had some deluded members on here over the years, including one who repeatedly claimed that as a L7 he could do a better job than all Premier League referees, but anyone with any amount of common sense knows that is nonsense.

Yes, absolute nonsense.

Always makes me laugh when a ref makes their PL debut and a commentator (etc) implies they were hand-picked from Hackney Marshes last Sunday morning.

I've watched a lot of National League this season. It's quite curious that the standard of refereeing is miles better than at the top levels. There are lots of reasons for this reality. One has to assume that for those I've seen who progress further to the top level, they too will end up in the same boat. So, it's not the individuals at the top level which is evidently the problem, it has to be a host of other reasons as to why it starts to go wrong, the higher one goes

I'll name one... Will Finnie
I was impressed with this fella. He was always doing something when the ball was out of play. And that something was always adding value
It made me realize that I don't do enough in this respect
If I was younger and realistically wanted to move up the ladder, watching him convinced me I'd have to up my game

Things become even more forensic with Observers (at every game except in the PL where they have delegates who analyse from afar etc) & coaches etc.
