The Ref Stop
Probably a red card, but will probably also get rescinded. Too much doubt for me
Aside from that, AT had a dubious game and frequently frustrated both sets of players. Toon playing well though, so don't care

Not entirely sure where else he was supposed to put his feet? His left ankle gets taken out as well.

Also, why would he want to intentionally hurt him? There was no 'beef' or argy-bargy going on between the pair of them.

This is what the MOTD pundits have just referenced but for Shearer to say the referee just "guessed" basing on player reaction would probably be frustrating to you referees im sure. Such a lazy accusation.

The VAR clearly did not notice the ankle buckle which may of meant he put his right foot in that position so it's the VAR that Shearer should be unhappy with, not the referee.

It's a question of where you put your feet when stumbling as he was. You fall forward and your legs go behind you, that is the safest option. Don't think he has any intention but to leave his mark on the player here in frustration at losing the race to the ball and he is also looking straight at where he is putting his studs, never mind his feet. Red card for me.

I've detected what I believe is a deliberate movement of the foot into his back. His leg is splayed and is landing on the right side of the player. He then moves this into a position that connects with the players back.

Secondary movement is enough for me to suggest it's a little more sinister than meets the eye. Brave decision from the referee in real time, but VAR was absolutely correct not to get involved as there's no case to clearly suggest it isn't a red card.

I feel an elite footballers feet are their tools, so he could have avoided the contact.

He could have collapsed his knee & rolled to the left if he wanted to IMHO.

Just about enough contact to classify as SFP.

I suppose this brings the question of whether it’s classed as VC or SFP.

Violent Conduct.
Ball is long gone (might even be out of play by the time the offence occurs) and so they are no longer challenging for the ball when it happens.

Edit: double checked. Ball is out of play. In my view it can't be SFP.

I've got no doubt this will be rescinded. I think this was a really difficult call for AT TBF, but it's taken me 24 hours to decide he was wrong!
If you're convicting someone of a crime (SFP/VC/Spitting etc...) you need a degree of certainty (a high bar), otherwise (just as in Criminal Law within reason) you risk 'wrongly convicted', which is the worst outcome of all
Nobody can say whether Duran intended this action. It's indeterminable. Therefore, it's a wrong KMD with the benefit of hindsight

This is a really tough one. I think it is unfortunate.

That is my thought. The first one is purely accidental, second I think is avoidable, but not sure if deliberate act. A really difficult one - it would definitely fall under the SFP instead of VC imho.

This BBC clip/analysis has change my mind too, given he had to switch his weight to the right as he turned his left ankle.

Alan Shearer criticising AT for not taking his time is laughable, that is the one thing he did do!

Joey Barton was absolutely on the money recently when stating Alan Shearer is unbelievably boring

I'm a bit disappointed in this comment. This forum is usually very good in terms of debating and discussing refereeing decisions rather than making critical comments of individual.s
FGS........ I've got a Bobby Robson and Alan Shearer signed B&W shirt hanging from my wall. I was born less than a mile from SJP
See if you can post over 6000 times without occasionally drifting off topic! I liked his goals but his personality is utterly wooden
FWIW, I like Joey Barton. I don't agree with everything he says. He's off his rocker at times, but at least he isn't dull as dishwater
The two of them have a long-running feud. An exhibition boxing match would be tough to call. Barton would win in the absence of Queensbury Rules

Enough tittle tattle
Quite surprised the appeal was rejected
Guilty by guesswork

That's where I'm at. There was ample opportunity for him to avoid that contact on the back.

Not things we can consider on the pitch as referees, but Duran's head was gone from when he felt he was humiliated at a free kick a few minutes before, plus he has history for this kind of thing. Absolutely no doubt in my mind that the red mist descended and he lost it.
