Do feel for Liverpool.
Been wanting to make a triple sub but thats been delayed as the 4th official is struggling with the boards.
Being able to make the subs would have changed the flow of the game immediately in that no quick throw (the fact that the throw in would unlikely have happened either as they wanted the sub in the previous stoppages) would have happened.
And the forward has had a stab at goal, missed, but a collision has caused him to go down and he's been afforded a second bite of a shot.

Technically you can call that a foul, but in in EPL 9 out of 10 times it is not called. Slight contact after the ball was kicked without the influence of the contact and there was no chance of getting to it.
At least the VAR kept out of it.

It did take Tim Robinson some time to sort the boards out, but then got me thinking that I thought club officials had done that previously and handed them already programmed to the 4th official? Also Andoni Iraola leaning over him moaning probably wasn't helping matters as it would have affected his concentration. Reminded me of the days I worked on trading floor IT support, the traders thought that standing behind me moaning about how much money they were losing as I tried to fix it would make it quicker. In reality it is the opposite, if they left me to it I'd have a much better chance of fixing it.

Agree that those aren't really given once the shot has been made, but not sure I'd call it a collision or slight contact. Allison came out at speed, got nowhere near the ball and caught Williams with more than enough force to send him to the floor. I wonder if it is another directive to tell them to give it even if the shot / cross has been made.

Graham Scott makes a very valid point here, the boards aren't easy to use, I struggled sometimes when I had to use them and that was just numbers 1 to 16. The changes today were 38 replaced 30, 73 replaced 18, and 21 replaced 6, that's 186 presses of the + button to get to the right numbers. In the days of AI there surely has to be an easier way of doing this.

As usual with the public from the TNT comment - they have no understanding as to what is actually happening & why! Squad numbers has caught them out!

Surely a very simple fix would be to have a setup where you can literally just type in the numbers? I'm not that quizzed up on IT so don't know how easy that would be but surely that is possible?

A chalkboard would be better than a board you have to advance one number at a time….

Aside: the limitations on the boards were less of an issue when there were three subs total. Five subs means there are a lot more multi sub scenarios. (I’m also not sure those boards really matter … the stadium or TV can tell the fans the subs, which seems their real purpose…)

Dissent, Sam Barrott told him repeatedly to go back to his line for the penalty and he didn't so out came the yellow.

If that's the case then has the referee got the decision wrong because from what I read, in a situation where an attacker gets a shot off and then a collision occurs, it's usually not a penalty unless the challenge is deemed reckless.

These situations are a bit grey because some people think it should be a penalty because the defender/goalkeeper was clumsy and late and other people who argue why should the attacking team get another opportunity to score when the challenge did not affect the shooting opportunity.

There is nothing in law that supports this so if the referee deemed the challenge to be careless, reckless or excessive force then a penalty should be awarded.

It's only grey because at some time someone somewhere applied this thinking and it seems to be one of those myths that have stuck, like you can't say "leave it" to a team mate.

There is a scenario where the ball is already out of play where a penalty can't be awarded for that reason, but I can only really think of one time that ever happened in a game that I have seen. Think Phil dowd was the referee. He cautioned for a reckless foul in PA and restarted with a goal kick.

Why even have boards at prem grounds with giant screens. Surely the EPL could ditch the boards completely. Seems archaic at this point. The 4th could still do the job… have an app that informs the scoreboard VJ…

Not all EPL grounds have big screens

Not so much the reason behind it but I'd say: at most times most epl referees in most games apply that concept.

The concept being, if you got a shot away unimpacted, no penalty is awarded for a careless foul committed after the shot.

That's fair enough and maybe where the confusion occurs because I remember last season some controversy where a Newcastle player wiped out a Man City player in the box after the City player took a shot but because the ball was out of play before the contact was made it was not awarded as a penalty.

I'm probably more of the opinion if a late challenge has not had any impact on the shot then I can accept no penalty but that is probably more of a fan view than what the laws say.
