He didn't ignore it, he missed it. It was a very poor decision and he will get an incorrect KMD as a result even though VAR intervened.Just watched Ekitike score a header for Liverpool against Villa, which was miles offside. The AR completely ignores it, though. If they're not going to flag those, is there any point them being there now ?
It is, but suggesting he deliberately ignored it is even more ridiculous. Why would he even think of doing that?He missed it ? That's ridiculous at that level
So put yourself in that position. Are you really saying you would see a player significantly offside but decide not to flag it, knowing that you'd be ridiculed and given a 7.9 mark. No person of sane mind would think that way, he's just switched off and missed the offside.I disagree. I think it's more ridiculous that an AR at that level can miss this, than haven seen it and was too scared to flag due to VAR
Totally agree regarding the MacAllister/Onana incident. After Onana wasn't sent off I thought it was a nailed on penalty. On instances where the flag is delayed, ARs aren’t delaying the flag because they’re not sure, they’re delaying the flag because they’ve been told to so that VAR can intervene if they’ve got the decisions wrong. I know this is controversial guidance but ARs on the Premier League obviously need to follow guidance else they won’t be ARs on the Premier League much longer.
On instances where the flag isn’t raised, there is little (no) reason for an AR to not flag (eventually) if they think a player is in an offside position. If they get it wrong either way, the VAR will correct it (and they will be marked down).
Now if you’ll forgive me, I’lll hijack the thread a little bit with my thoughts on the rest of the game rather than have two threads for the same game. In the 72nd minute, there is a struggle between MacAllister and Onana before a Liverpool corner is played. MacAllister is pushed in the neck by Onana. Onana is cautioned. I have to be honest, I am a Liverpool fan but I still cannot get to any outcome that isn’t Violent Conduct as it was a deliberate strike with the hand to the neck when not challenging for the ball and the force used was not negligible. The referee probably did not have a clear view due to the crowded goal area but I would have expected a review, even in the Premier League.
Liverpool then try to take the corner again and Onana pushes/holds MacAllister again and is publicly warned by the referee. In reality, this is the probably the action I would have taken but the braver (and probably more correct) action is a second caution. Third time’s the charm and MacAllister holds Onana as the corner is coming in and a defensive free kick is awarded. I struggle to see any justification for MacAllister not being cautioned here. It’s a blatant hold and a caution is obviously needed for match control.
In general, I think the referee needed to take stronger action. There are a couple instances of game disrepute, including players being pushed into the advertising boards, where no cautions are issued.
That's just due to the VAR protocol, they can't flag until the attacking phase of play has ended.I don't buy that. It's happening all the time. Sometimes it's delayed flag. Other times, it's very late ones
That’s even saying he missed it. I bet if we had access to the comms someone would be saying it’s a potential offside and he has just forgot to flag as he knew VAR were checking it. My point being - difficult to speculate..
Extremely unlikely. There has to be a call on the field. By not rising the flag, he is saying there was no OS offense. As a result, he is getting dinged on his performance. No AR wants to be overruled if he caught the OS live. That’s even saying he missed it. I bet if we had access to the comms someone would be saying it’s a potential offside and he has just forgot to flag as he knew VAR were checking it. My point being - difficult to speculate..
Exactly that, this one was bad but there have been much worse. This one would probably be onside if Arsene Wenger gets his way with the offside law.I think people forget how terrible some of the offside calls were pre-var.
Not much point. Ball in/out of play, except for when a goal is scored. Routine delayed obvious offside flags... just to help get the right restart. Bit of comms to the ref maybe. A few more eyes to pick-up on what VAR will see anywayJust watched Ekitike score a header for Liverpool against Villa, which was miles offside. The AR completely ignores it, though. If they're not going to flag those, is there any point them being there now ?
