Inappropriate comment to opposing team official

Especially given everything that has transpired in the United States over the past couple of years (just Google "Sally Yates soccer report" for more information), I can tell you that in the US we would be expected to issue a send off for OFFINABUS for a situation like this. For me, even without that context, I'd still go red. It's a personal insult meant to provoke a response. Deal with it swiftly.

i absolutely think you need to deal with it

but players and officials will always be insulting and offensive and abusive to each other - I don't think red/yellow should be the default action here

"but players and officials will always be insulting and offensive and abusive to each other" this is a bad thing! Rugby players do not have outbursts like this because they know every official will clamp down hard on it.

Of course they do. They're hardly complementing each other on their skin care routines when they flare up

They do. Arguably their fall outs are a lot worse than we see in football as well

i;m barely sending a player off for calling me a dickhead (i am though, don't worry), no chance I'm doing it player on player!

Huh. I think a lot has to do with age and level. I only do u19/High School and down here in the US and am almost certainly sending off for that. (I say almost as tone/context could soften that substantially, but starting point is definitely a send off.)

Has anyone listened to the bbc sounds interview with Mark Clatenburg? Apologies if posted elsewhere, have only just joined forum. It is a great listen.

One of the points he makes is banter seems to be going out of the game, particularly with players and coaches to referees, which he views as a bad thing.

I guess one of the reasons for that is through the laws of the game we are trying to remove subjectivity - one persons banter is another’s insult.

Interesting that a comparison to rugby comes up (sure it does often) and speaking also as a qualified rugby coach, there is a lot we can learn and apply in our game as well. I am certainly trying that, speaking to players like Nigel Owens did to his.

Americans are also (generally) more sensitive to swearing than Brits

Banter i’m all for

Telling a female coach she is overweight and she should go yo weight watchers is insulting. It’s an easy red card.

We are not TV refs. You just cannot let this go.

That's an interesting point that I was thinking about as I read this thread. Is the fact the abuse was directed at a female coach (in a men's game) swayed people towards a red?

Think I would be looking at her reaction, if she laughs if off and / or gives it back with interest it is going to be very difficult to give a red card there and you're on a hiding to nothing before a ball is kicked. Whereas if she doesn't take it well, looks or sounds offended, it makes the decision that much easier.
