I really am getting more and more confused with VAR...
What/how they getting involved with that free kick given to France that should not have been given anyway.
No card was issued so its not a case of their favourite tagline "mistaken identity".
 
Someone explain that Dembele freekick/ non freekick then! They’re just making it up as they go along! I have stuck up for all referees and all decisions this World Cup but this one has really got to me - it’s not even that important but it’s the one that’s made me realise that we may be obsolete at the top level soon, a definite case of re-refereeing!!
 
And then an overturned free kick? Suggested by TV that it was a VAR intervention. Again it’s a bit odd. Don’t like how referee allows himself to be crowded by players at every contested decision either. Keeps turning his back on situations too which doesn’t help.

Absolutely beyond whatever extended remit fifa wants VAR to have

Its just a poor initial decision
 
Have to laugh at Matterface claiming ref had enough of waiting for the obvious offside so blew before AR flagged...
Er, they could have talked before via comms and ref blew when ready (attack stopped etc)..
 
I suspect, and would definitely like to think, one of his on-pitch colleagues told him over comms that he'd given a totally wrong free kick.
 
Keeper gone down twice with barely a touch on him.
That free kick in last minute of 90 for France was extremely close to being on the penalty box line and potential penalty.
Barely looked at based on speed of kick taken.

I would be surprised to be fair because the incident took place on the Referee’s normal path of control & was (too) close, with the active & non-active Assistants (& 4th official) nowhere near where it took place.

Surprised, yes. Purely because the one training thing ive had, and one thing refs tell assistants in pre match is not to get involved if they're virtually on top and AR is miles (not literally, obviously) away. If they're undermining from distance a referee from a couple of yards... good job its only on comms.

Multiple sports journalists on X, including Dale Johnson, are reporting that it was one of the assistants telling him he had got it wrong rather than VAR. Appreciate they were a long way from it but it was very obviously wrong, and with comms they can obviously do it without anyone knowing it wasn't them.
 
His refereeing seemed a bit messy to me.

1. He forgot his vanishing spray.
2. He was resetting the penalty, whilst the player started his run up.
