Possibly a learning from here, check position of Liverpool defender, does she enter the penalty area to commit a penalty offence?

Can sometimes feel because the player has fallen in the box, therefore has to be a penalty.

My point was we/I have given penalties incorrectly when we see the fouled player fall in to the box when the point of contact is clearly outside & should have been a free kick.

Contact appears to be outside.

Not sure what your description means does she enter the penalty area? Point of contact determines offence location.
What DJIC means is if no part of the Liverpool defender is inside the box then contact can't be inside the box (which seems simple, but apparently not clear here)

Rookie mistake. You expect a referee at the level to get this right. She has done all the hard work and placed herself in an almost perfect position to make a right decision.

I'm sure she'll be kicking herself after seeing the replay. 🤣

Agree, she's made the mistake of looking at where the player lands rather than where the contact was. Can't be any blame on the AR as the referee was in a much better position.

I do feel that the WSL have got themselves a bit conflicted when it comes to refereeing, the clubs are constantly complaining that the refereeing standard isn't good enough and isn't as good as the men's game. But they want female referees, and best will in the world they aren't going to be anywhere as experienced as L1 referees in the male game. This was arguably one of the top female referees in England making the mistake, but I don't think she has refereed above The National League in the male game. They aren't making a fair comparison, if they want the match officials to be female they are going to have to accept they probably won't be as good as male referees also officiating at the top level. They might get to be over time, and I think it is the right thing for the image of the game to have female officials, but there has to be a level of realism.

Its a dilemma for the PGMOL, but I feel the Women want everything done new/yesterday, when things are already moving at pace, but not as quick as they want. I feel they just have to be patient and to let the game evolve at the pace it is.

I remember the WSL asking for Championship referees but then baulking at the match fee they’d have to pay.

The women’s game (and refereeing) is evolving, but they’re going to have to be patient. It’s difficult to compare the men’s game to the women’s. And I guess the same goes for the officiating.

There have still been quality women officials out out there- Rebecca Welch and Sian Massey.

And others are about and working hard to be as good as them.

I think there is also the issue that mistakes in the women's game (by both players and officials) are highlighted far more widely than in lower league mens - sometimes for dubious reasons. This was a poor error (I was watching, and it was clear everyone was immediately surprised by the decision apart from anything else), but I'm not sure it was any more egregious than some you see in National League or similar.

It was an error, but I think pre-VAR you wouldn't never see this at the top of the men's game (indeed I've seen it happen)!

It's a good argument for VAR in the WSL.

I must say there is a lot being done by the FA and PGMOL on improving the Women's Pathway and quality, it's not going to be a step Level 4's make to help fill their weekends anymore, you're expected to pick a pathway to progess. The selection process will be intensifying each year too with more development opportunities for promotion candidates

I certainly agree with your final paragraph. As to VAR in the WSL, although they are almost demanding it (as some clubs are in the mens EFL Championship despite much negativity from the PL), I can’t see it happening any time soon, especially when many games are played outside of their main venues & cost will certainly come into the equation.
