The Ref Stop

Cardiff Ref Strike

Again, you’re a volunteer . No one can force you to referee and no one can force you to find a replacement referee.

If you don’t turn up, you don’t turn up. Can the County punish you in some way? Sure. Are they going to punish a large group of referees? Not a chance, they can’t afford to.
They could and should would stamp this right out while show resilience

Up here if you pull out under 72 hours notice from county appointment you expect to assist in sourcing replacements so strike wouldn’t work
But that doesn't put a stop to it because you simply do it providing the required 72 hours notice.
If you are ill, then there's no chance you can be expected to help find a replacement.

Even when I was Level 3, and therefore operating in professional and semi-professional football, I sometimes had to pull out with less than 72 hours due to work, that was never held against me.

Assuming you are in England there is absolutely nothing in any of the regulations that can require a referee to find, or even assist in finding, a replacement referee if they withdraw less than 72 hours before the game.

It will be interesting to see what the outcome of the withdrawal of services has. Quite conceivable that the vast majority of games will go ahead and pass without incident as players notch it down a little for the weekend, the following week the refs get the mickey taken out of them , “ We didn’t need you last week” “ Last weeks ref was better” all said tongue in cheek of course and then the third weekend it’s all forgotten and back to normal🤷🏻‍♂️

I hope in some small way it does make players, coaches etc think about the extremes of their behaviour and if it does alter the mindset of one or two then it can be measured as a success but as to the HE’S described in an earlier post they will never change.

I'm going to ignore the debate on scabbing, there's no point any of use speculating on the justification because AFAIK none of us are referees in Cardiff dealing with this behaviour.

Personally, if issues of behaviour aren't dealt with and problem players are repeat offending with no consequence then in my area I would refuse to officiate the leagues affected. Even if it's "just a few people" you don't want to take a game unsure if you're going to face a bad apple because they keep being put back in the barrel

This is a really good point. I no longer officiate in a certain league because I found it so unenjoyable I started to question why I was refereeing at all. That's not an uncommon experience, I'm sure.
