The Ref Stop

Cardiff Ref Strike

The Ref Stop
I am not sure how I feel about strikes as an effective measure. However, I absolutely feel sympathy for, and solidarity with, a group of referees who feel this is a necessary measure. They have my support because clearly nothing else has worked to date. We deserve to feel and be safe in pursuing this pastime and whilst resilience, peer support and skill development can all help improve our capacity to respond to dangerous situations and prolonged abuse it can’t be on referees to lead the change in game culture that is so desperately needed in my opinion.

It will be interesting to see how many games go ahead with referees, as membership of the Referees Association or Referees Societies in areas varies, but not near 100%.

I have also just seen that many of the teams are trying to move their fixtures for tonight to try and use a loophole. Does show what the priority is to these teams instead of addressing the actual issue, which is of course the players/spectators.

It would come through the RA, or more likely I would say Ref Support UK. Can't ever see the top level referees striking though.

Hate to say this, but eventually a referee will be killed or assaulted to the extent that he or she suffers life changing injuries. That would then drive urgent change, but it shouldn't need a trigger point like that, they need to very strictly enforce extremely long bans for anyone that assaults a referee.
Sad but true.

Just a matter of time.

So they ran and hide they clearly didn’t realise what they signed up for stop trolling by defending the indefensible.
No one signed up for abuse and cards clearly don't work because problem players are returning. The point of the strike is to call for action from the league/CFA, something you have agreed in this thread is needed. So you agree with their aims but just think they should do nothing to achieve them.

I'm sorry you get abused at work, but sounds like you're big and 'ard enough to deal with it. Not everyone is, there will be under 18s refereeing and playing in these games, everyone has a right to feel safe at a football game.

It's the complete opposite of running and hiding - it's standing up and being counted.

I disagree with but don't dismiss your viewpoint, and don't doubt there are others who feel like you, but as demonstrated on this thread you are in a minority of one. (maybe one and a half!).
