For those of us watching, anyone thoughts on the Cucurella handball? Completely stupid thing to do and I think he’s a very very lucky boy

Lucky indeed.

It baffles me that a stamp out of frustration on someone's bum isn't deemed VC due to lack of force.... Sorry but when was a stamp part of football?

Any stamp, punch, kick out, slap should be VC regardless of force. It is not part of the game whatsoever.

For those who haven’t seen it…..

Premier League have released a statement to say; The referee’s call of no penalty for handball by Cucurella was checked and confirmed by VAR – with his arm deemed to be in an expected position with no clear or deliberate action towards the ball."

I really don’t agree with the last part of the statement.

A rubbish game full of everything wrong with high level professional football, play acting, petulance, disputing decisions, surrounding officials. And yes I’m an Arsenal follower! Re the penalty claim too high on the arm ?

Interesting, if advantage was played? (It wasn’t) Arsenal had two good opportunities to score, would VAR have then given them a third from the penalty spot if they deemed it hand ball?

I guess it depends on what the referee says to VAR. If he says he saw it and played advantage, I doubt VAR can get involved.

We can take our pick for how Cucurella could have been sanctioned.
  1. Unsporting behaviour for the type of handball it was
  2. Unsporting behaviour for simulating being fouled
  3. Dissent towards the AR
I'm assuming he received none of the above. Though I don't think you would issue 1 and 2 as separate sanctions if you deemed both had occurred, being part of a single act of USB.

They can if playing advantage was a clear and obvious error. As well as the handball decision was clearly and obviously not wrong.

I don't think there is (should be) an explanation/conversation between VAR and referee until a review is recommended. In this case there has to be a advantage signal for the advantage de vision to be reviewed, otherwise only the handball is reviewed.
