Spoke to a 6-5 today under Middlesex FA. He said they do not get told when an observer is coming and only after the game will they know.

Does this sound right?!
No, as @RustyRef says there should be contact.

The only reason I can think of, is that is changes his style when knowing an observer is coming down. So, it is a test - but not the norm.

The Ref Stop
That's my third observation under the belt. I was changed from one fixture to another as a ref had been moved up to cover another game and the appoints secretary wanted someone to do a game "which is usually tough" at the top of table.

The game went really well, not much in the way of difficult incidents. 3 yellows. Debrief went well and I know I'll get a decent mark. I thought id been pretty unlucky with my game changing last minute to one that's more challenging but it wasn't the case. 2 hours extra travelling but its rough with the smooth. I hope everyone else had had a good game today too. 2 more observations to go.

Hey @MattTheRef! That was me on Saturday, hope you're game went well!

At Middlesex we put all our fixtures to the co-ordinator and they can come to any game, we don't know which one they will appear at.

I did expect one this weekend and no suprise they were there on Sunday! No contact before. Debrief after the game and report sent post game

The idea is that you should referee without performing for the observer...

That goes very much against the FA guidance, and is also a bit pointless. If you are refereeing on a grass roots game and there is a bloke on the side lines writing things down you are going to be pretty sure he is an observer. Not as if he is going to be a talent scout.

Like @RustyRef says, it's not normally done that way.

Also a bit pointless if they're waiting to give you their post-match brief but you've arranged to shoot straight off somewhere (and can't be late) because you didn't know they were coming ... :hmmm:

The current average for L3's is 72.35. But it is eye wateringly tight. Those averaging 73+ are in great shape for promotion. Those averaging less than 72 are looking over their shoulder at demotion.

Marks for L4's will vary across the country. Maybe especially between North & South  . However, my best guess is that 73+ is excellent, 72+ is good and anything under 71.5 is a problem.
Observer average on my league last season was 71.6.

That's excellent for a 5-4 observation. You must have bossed a challenging game.

Before the game I was told it was always a challenging fixture. I know I did well throughout the game, but I wouldn't say it ever reached the stage where it was challenging. A couple of flash points in the last few mins where a couple of yellows came out as the away team realised that time to come back from 3-1 down was running out but thats it. The possibility of it becoming very challenging was ever present but we got through without incident. 22 handshakes at the end and both managers which is always a bonus.

CC'd in on an email over the weekend where a 5-4 has got an 86.... Anyone seen anything like it? Sounds extremely high!

a mate of mine got an 84 when he was going 5-4

completely wasted as well as he never actually made it to 4 (fitness / commitment issues not marks!)
Not a bad score 84... for someone 'below standard' on 'fitness/work-rate/positioning'

That's going to get reviewed

and overturned. Unless you have refereed what can only be described as a war there is no way you can get an 86, or 84. It will be an old school observer that hasn't kept up to date with the new system, and he will either have to be "retrained" or removed from the list.
