The Ref Stop

Boots

I have to ask…. Is anyone using grip socks? Either full-sized grip socks or grip socks with a sock ‘sleeve?’ I’m tempted but didn’t know if it was frowned upon and something only players do!!

The Ref Stop
I use them but especially when on the line and I notice a difference on how easily I can turn, not so much when in the middle. I wear the Nike sleeves from Refstop (Use discount code in banner) and I love it.

Tried it for the first time this season and won't look back. Find it so much more comfortable, and less blisters. Not to mention that the toe area on the Nike socks is awful and only lasts a few months so this solves that problem

I use grip socks. I can't say I notice any difference in terms of blister prevention, but what I do notice is that the the toe and heel area lasts more than 3 games, which the same can't be said for the Nike socks.

Have a look at Sokito boots. Italian made, lasted more than a season already, very light and comfortable. And nicely understated in all black. And they do a bit for the environment if you're that way inclined...

As for grip socks - definitely, with a sleeve. I cut off my old ones when they soles got holes in and now wear them with grip socks, which make the Sokitos even more comfortable and no holes in my socks!

For £175 a pop I'd want my boots to score goals for me as well as just get me around the pitch and last a while!

Asics GEL-LETHAL™ 19 - anyone know where to get these in the UK as my achilles are giving me a problem

It then depends how insistent they are.. I've seen that in a lot of places, and then the manager walks on in flat soled trainers...
Agree, some are more strict on it than others. Go to somewhere like Bedfont Sports in West London and they are very hot on it, to the extent that they keep a box full of boots of all sizes for when people turn up with the wrong footwear.

Not passing judgment in any way, but we are WAY less particular about the shoes worn on FieldTurf (what we call 4G in the United States). Many, many referees wear flat-soled running shoes on turf/4G in the US with no restrictions from facility managers.

For my last season of officiating this spring, I alternated between a pair of Brooks Ghost running shoes for pretty much all 4G middles and lines where I didn't need to move quickly and hybrid Umpiro shoes that I'm guessing you'd classify more as hockey shoes and wouldn't allow for lines and limited middles. For games where I felt I needed more ability to cut and turn, I would wear the Umpiros even if I was on turf.

@RefIADad When I see US artificial fields they always look like what we call astro turf.

Astro turf isn't even allowed to be used for official football competitions in the UK.

Ah, we may be having a moment where American and British terms are crossing wires!!

This link is what we call AstroTurf, which we hardly ever see except in hockey-style indoor games.
