Well..

Just back from 3 weeks break, wanted a game so got assigned a local district game. From minute we kicked off, clear one team only interested in playing any actual football.

You know when one team act like they get every decision against them? This was that game. Certainly didn't intend for it to come across like this but unfortunately just how the game goes.

Sin binned a player first half for clear dissent, no issues there. Pulled captains in several times for talks regarding some of the moans (pushes, pulls), arging and barging. Seems to make it to half time without any further issues.

55 mins in, same player on a YC makes a reckless challenge in good view of me leaves half his trailing leg in the opponents stomach. Tending to the player, it's all kicking off behind me, once I'm satisfied he's being treated I signal for the player to come over to issue a 2YC. That teams captain informs me if I'm now going to send him off they'll walk off. I tell him that regardless those comments won't change my decision.

Showed him the yellow and then red, he turns as if he's coming off and then launches the spare ball we're using into the adjacent gardens (cheers mate), then turns back around gives me a load of verbal and then shoves me twice in the chest and shoulders.

Honestly I dropped the card in my hand from the force and kinda looked at him like wtf! Straight on the whistle and blown for FT at 60 mins.

A full mass con then going on with various pushing and shoving before everyone collectively leaves the pitch. Another game going on next to us which then interrupts that as well.

Had enough witnesses and submitted the EI, spoke with both CFA RAO and RDO, couldn't be more supportive which as a still relatively newly qualified is certainly appreciated.

I suppose I don't really know why I'm writing this out, I had a good run out on the line at the local academy today and a chance to speak to other referees who already knew (word travels fast clearly), and from my understanding this team have an already poor reputation.

Just annoyed it happens to me, after the S6 in the last game I did in the middle then this, after being coached for 7-6 felt like I was making good progress and now feeling like I've gone a little backwards. I'm 17 games in and to have both a abandonment due to assault and a mass con has knocked me a little admittedly.

Cheers all 👍

I know why you wrote the post and you were absolutely right to do it. Sorry to hear you are having a though time early on in your refereeing career and sounds like you are getting the support that is expected. Even though it is not your fault, not letting it impact your confidence is easier said than done. One suggestion I have is to ask for appointments with teams that have good reputations for the next few games or even do a few youth/junior games to bring the 'feel good' and confidence back.

Laying hands on you should get the culprit a good length of ban so no other referee has to put up with them. It sounds like you did everything to give the game a chance, but as you state, there is nothing you can do when one side is only interested in playing against your decisions and not the opposition. I think this experience has actually progressed your understanding of the mindsets of players and you may well consider a different approach to the way you handle things... or you may be happy how you dealt with it and use the same approach next time. It sounds to me that the captain with his threats to walk off shouldn't actually be anywhere near that armband either as it speaks for their level of respect for the game and for your authority.

You don't mention the coaches of either team, what input did they have - if any?

I think in future leaning on an early card to set a tone could help, not for every game admittedly but a hard affair like this could have done with it. Yes, the vice captain was the goalkeeper and actually the levell-est head on the field just a shame he was so far away to really impact his team. The coaches on both sides were fine, i just think the home manager unable to control some of his lads. From conversations I've had with other referees this week already this team are known for poor behaviour, and the general consensus is that a ban is coming for the player in question. I have already heard from the National FA too.

Sounds like you have made good progress, you’ve dealt with a tough situation (not of your making) really well, just 17 matches in, you should be very proud how you have dealt with this. You kept calm, delivered the necessary sanction and abandonment.

Well done, good luck, go forward with confidence. 👏

Thanks all, taking a break from the men's game till the new year to do more at assistant & womens game. On a positive note the player has been charged by the FA, thanks for the comments and advice, my support from other refs here and locally/CFA and RA has been outstanding

Just thought I'd bump the post, the player has been charged today: Serious Case under E3.1 for Physical Contact against a Match Official. Does anyone know what happens next as the email just says I'll next get an update when the charge has been heard.

If the player pleads not guilty to the charge then you might be contacted about attending the personal hearing; if he pleads guilty or doesn't ask for a personal hearing then just sit back and wait to hear the result.

many thanks, trying to find the answer out to that online was much more difficult than it needed to be. Hopefully he admits, would save us both a lot of issues but i wont hold my breath

They are very likely to contest the charge as the minimum ban for that offence is about 6 months, but it is a clear cut case then they might still admit to it to help them avoid an even longer ban.

That means should there be an appeal it will be heard by FA's serious case panel. Flowchart showing how that process works can be seen here https://www.calameo.com/esports-media/read/001230235eb594c3001ee?authid=5uAP6R77YsNG

For general details on how cases are managed can be seen in the FA Disciplinary Handbook here, page 42 covers the serious case information. https://www.calameo.com/esports-media/read/001230235e58276231094?authid=BWqyBKqaSaH0

this is really helpful, thanks Rusty.

So, just curious from the other side of the pond . . .344 days seems a weirdly precise yet random number. Is there logic to the number? Is there some practical reason they want it to be less than a year?
