The Ref Stop
I find it easier to keep my counting consistent by doing it verbally too, but I'm not doing it loud for the whole ground to hear (too busy trying to get my breath back to be bellowing the countdown 😅)

So far I have found that a shout to the goalkeeper the first time they have only a few seconds left is enough to remind them to get rid of it. After that the compliance is pretty good without counting out loud etc. It probably makes an easy proactive/preventative development point for an observer if they think you aren't making it clear then the keeper ends up penalised.

The FA showed an example of goal keeping taking a 5 second breather on the floor after making a fairly routine double save as an example of a complex save where the count should be delayed.
That seems to be somewhat contrary to what is stated in the X post from the IFAB shown by @Russell Jones - and to what Collina said about it being to stop goalkeepers lying on the ground after making a save.

I reffed my first game last night. I must admit, I was tardy starting my count on a few occasions due to distractions. Communications with other players being the recurring reason. I was against the change, but maybe it's got legs after all
Will take a while to become second nature. Perhaps the refs on TV are also occasionally slow to remember to invoke

I wasn't at my best. Shattered in the heat/humidity. Fitness is not where it needs to be
Fatigue leaves insufficient capacity to deal with the demands of the game. My smart watch thinks I ought to have snuffed it

If there was guidance not to, I've totally missed it...

I have been counting it out loud.
The guidance doesn't mentionna verbal countdown, only a visual one. Ive been verbally counting down pre season to get teams used to it, but i will be reverting to just visual countdowns when the season starts here. Will tell the keeper to get rid of it when there 2 or 3 seconds left.

The response from the keepers in the many pre season friendlies tournaments here has been to look to get rid of it quickly. It's been a good addition to the law.

Do i think they will keep at it at the top level? Absolutely not. I see in the papers today there has been the announcement that simulation and holding at corners is to be punished more. We've had all these initiatives before, they last a couple of months and die out im afraid

Whilst I agree with you that this will probably disappear, rarely to be seen. The countdown isn’t guidance, it is law.

I think the visual countdown is there expressly to make it harder for refs to not enforce it. If you aren’t doing the countdown, you are blatantly ignoring the Law. If you do the countdown, it’s hard to not call it. Will it be slower than 8? Sure. But I don’t think it will get wow where we were last year

From the 6 home games i have seen the referees are not starting the count until the keeper gets to his feet regardless.

Yesterday the away keeper spent 9, 11, 12 and 14 seconds on the floor after receving the ball into his hands. On two of those occasions he didn't even need to go to ground.

Regardless the count has never started until the keeper decides to stand up. They are trying to avoid the chance of giving a corner.

Once the away team were losing the keeper suddenly became a lot quicke yesterday. 😇😇😇😇😇😇

I've watched most of the televised games this season in the EPL and EFL and really struggling to remember a case of a keeper holding onto the ball. Not saying it hasn't happened, but it has been really noticeable to me that keepers are releasing the ball must faster than before.

I was at a EFL game yesterday and the ref didn't do the "count" once.

Away keeper was warned 3 times though (verbally). I counted 11, 14 and 16.

I have yet to give a corner for the keeper offence.
I demonstrate the 5, but keepers are certainly aware of this rule. I’m surprised if it isn’t enforced elsewhere.
