The Ref Stop
£50 to apply for promotion this year with Sheffield FA?!

Sure it was only £20 last few seasons. Other counties the same?
Indeed. It helps cover the cost of matchday observers (not entirely) and shows a commitment from your end to the progression pathway.

I believe it’s similar with Birmingham. Same as what we paid originally if we are rolling over to this season, if we’re starting fresh then it’s a higher fee.

This is interesting as I know in Suffolk we don't have to give a penny for promotion applications. Completely understand why some others charge with all the costs it would require to facilitate it though.

I understand there are costs and don’t disagree with a fee being in place. Just surprised by such a significant price increase.

I think this should be free.

Why? There are all sort of handouts from counties/the FA.

Should refs pay for referee development? What are the annual fees for? Clubs get handouts so are refs not part of the game?

If it was/is point blank free you'll get tons of people apply with no intention of seeing it through and end up having to waste a ton of resources getting these people matchday coaching visits before they inevitably lose interest.

I don't think there should be an outright charge, especially as high as £50 though. I think a nominal fee of £20 max or alternatively as suggested above, £50 deposit, refundable once all elements are completed, is fair.

When do counties advertise promotion for the forthcoming season generally? Is there a cut off date for applications (esp for 5-4)?

This discussion about cost is confusing - the payment is a refundable deposit, which the applicant gets back if they complete the required elements (or have to leave because of illness, for example)

Usually advertised in early June as referee registration opens on 01 June, and registration is essential before any promotion application.
In most counties the cut off date is 31 July for 5>4. For Y1>Y2, 7>6 and 6>5 it is possible to apply at any stage of the season, as there are several "windows" within the season (once registered)

Not sure this is always the case. Possibly is where you are, but believe some/most counties charge an outright fee. I never had any of my fees refunded.

I do agree that it should be the case though.

FA Handbook states: "The Parent Association may charge promotion candidates an administration fee (the sum to be determined from time to time by The Association); the administration fee will be refunded to a
candidate who completes the promotion process, regardless of whether or not they are promoted" ... so you need to apply for a refund😁

Pretty sure the FA have told CFAs they can go against that, and for most CFAs it is an outright fee, not a refundable fee.

Thanks for the comprehensive reply! 👍🏻

My county it’s a £20 deposit for 7-6/6-5… presumably it’s repaid if you ask for it but I think that’s more than fair for 4 MDC visits and all the admin
