I agree that it would make sense, but the current protocol doesn't allow it and the officials would potentially end up in hot water. Where would the line be drawn though? Do they then alert the referee if they get a corner / GK decision wrong, miss or incorrectly award a careless or reckless foul, miss or incorrectly give a caution, etc? As I understand it there were no direct consequences of there being 12 players on the pitch for a brief period, but we frequently see that goals are scored from a free kick that shouldn't have been given, or from a corner that should have been a goal kick, or a player gets sent off for a second caution when the first one was wrong, and so on.
