The Ref Stop
Quite the embarrassing boo boo……

Van Persie FUMES after opponents are allowed to play with TWELVE MEN

There has been games replayed in this country (though not at the same level as far as I am aware) when there has been an incorrect AoL and the offended team were negatively effected by the outcome (one I was involved in, but not as an on field official).

Doesn't get more embarrassing than that. Abysmal from the whole reffing team
And they have VAR don't they?
how have they also missed it, even if they're watching these sort of things.

Surely communication between assistants is clear. Player doesn't enter until previous vacates. This means that if he's left elsewhere then either assistant must speak up when he has left. Until then the oncoming players stays off.

Even if VAR saw it they can't get involved as it doesn't fall under one of goal / no goal, penalty / no penalty, direct red card or mistaken identity. If a goal had been scored with a 12th player on the pitch then I guess they could get involved under the first of those criteria.

Don’t believe VAR can get involved. But it really shouldn’t get to the stage where they need to. This is absolute basics.

Much like the sheff utd goal v villa, if var is not allowed to get involved then football needs to get its head out of its backside and allow it. If they notice before the on-field officials then they absolutely must be allowed to let them know. Zero excuses

I agree that it would make sense, but the current protocol doesn't allow it and the officials would potentially end up in hot water. Where would the line be drawn though? Do they then alert the referee if they get a corner / GK decision wrong, miss or incorrectly award a careless or reckless foul, miss or incorrectly give a caution, etc? As I understand it there were no direct consequences of there being 12 players on the pitch for a brief period, but we frequently see that goals are scored from a free kick that shouldn't have been given, or from a corner that should have been a goal kick, or a player gets sent off for a second caution when the first one was wrong, and so on.

It's not hard! Draw the line at factual errors in law or protocols.

Letting an incorrect sub come on/too many subs/incorrect shoot out protocols.

If var recognise such a poor factual error like this they should be empowered to intervene.

That nothing came of it is sheer luck and if laws/protocols aren't changed it's borderline negligence.
