The Ref Stop

David Coote leaked video

Whilst I admire your 'keep an open-mind' stance, @RustyRef I find it implausible that The Sun would publish the video (together with their logo watermarked over the top of it) unless they were absolutely 100% sure it was him and rock solid with their sources.

As mentioned above, Philip Walton described DC as "captain sensible"... Mike Dean on Sky Sports News said he was "one of the quieter members of the group" (or something along those lines). It's really quite sad his career will, inevitably, be ended by all this.

I just hope there's not more stuff to come.
Mistakes can be made, and the Sun know this more than anyone given the damages they have had to pay out over the years.

Talking of mistakes, I presume the past few posts meant to say Peter Walton rather than Phillip Walton? Hope Phillip Walton isn't now lining up legal advice to defend himself for something he had nothing to do with.

The even more sad thing about the whole thing for me is if David Coote did not signal advantage on a highly probable DOGSO, none of this may of come out at this moment in time.

That said, he also got himself to blame for all this, your responsible for your own behaviour and he clearly not been responsible. The Klopp comments I felt he could get away with in terms of a lengthy time away and being bought back into the PL say in over a years time but this latest video is just a step too far.

Being recorded by someone else when you're wasted is something I can sympathise with.

However, recording yourself doing coke and sending it to anyone (when you're a public figure) is so stupid that I really am torn as to whether this is him. Could he be THAT stupid?

Crazy but could well be true.

Overall, f*** me.

Double standards all over it. We know that coke is a common part of the UK fan experience. And abusing language is a common part of the football experience for players, coaches and fans.

No excuse for getting caught. But f*** me the moralising is outrageous.

I just hope DV is getting help. But somehow I doubt it. Referee culture in general does not provide a good support network in extremis and I wonder if DC’s employers have the resources, skills or will to help him. For the rest of us, if anything like this happens to us, we are alone until we get anything remotely resembling employment rights.

You are right of course SS. To add to the contradictions, what I do know 100% is that if this was a footballer, they would have significant personal support either from the club and/or PFA, as would athletes in others sports with a player association/union. They would be advised to either a) keep quiet or b) get ahead of the story, but more importantly they would be rehabilitated both literally and figuratively. Their career would not be over, albeit they'd be looking at a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

David Coote's career is over, as officials are held to a higher standard, as they really should be whether that's fair or not. I just hope PGMOL are supporting and advising him in private because a) he'll be going through hell and is likely having a mental wellbeing crisis and b) whilst he is almost entirely responsible for his actions, to quote Barney Ronay, "David Coote didn't make football. Football made David Coote."

As far as the rest of us are concerned, this marching powder revelation will probably do us a favour
It deflects from the conspiracy theory rhetoric and makes DC an internet sensation. It discredits him from being suitable for the role completely, rather than maintain focus on whether or not he has it in for Liverpool

I'd just like to empathize the man has not said anything against Liverpool other than they were "sh*t" on the day. Absolutely nothing was said that shows any bias against them.

Sadly, I'll no doubt be hearing about this from supporters of said club for the next 20 years.

He did make a comment against there former manager including a protected characteristic a criminal offence technically I think that gives Liverpool fans a certain right to be upset you would be if it was someone you looked at fondly.

He's also sat next to a guy who specifically says "we all hate scousers" and does nothing to distance himself from or disagree with that comment. Appreciate it's not ironclad evidence of what he thinks, but as I said up thread, it's not crazy to at least consider the possibility of bias.

He did comment about the match they had just lost, many Liverpool fans likely to agree they were s***te on that day.

The fact he really doesn't like Klopp is of no surprise given how Klopp has berated him, again totally understandable.

But you can fully question his judgement on putting this on video. (Putting aside the second video which takes his judgement to a different level again)

I have two local managers to me who I would say exactly the same comments DC has made (apart from they’re not German!), but I still referee their teams with no bias, I see Blue v Red & referee what is in front of me.

Klopp is a nasty piece of work.
I don't think any Liverpool fans are going around thinking any referee doesn't think he is a c**t.
As long as they're reffed the same they don't care.
I'd take horrible Klopp over the damp squib Ten Haag an my club any day.

Have read another, very serious allegation, with indications that is due to come out in a weekend tabloid. Not repeating here, but it will lead to much wider questions for ref community, imho, if true.

As was alluded to further up in the thread, there is slightly more to this than will be printed.

I hope David is being supported by PGMOL as this would be such a difficult time to deal with.

Further allegations been released late last night and early this morning. You can’t see how there could be any way back for him professionally from here.

Honestly, beside the drug use I don't see the issue.
If he's have been making plans to go out for beers would this even register?
Feels like a bit of a pile-on at this point. The Sun better have their ducks in a row or DC is getting £££.

But it's not beers, its illegal regulated substances.

Half of London is a huge exaggeration, it's use is high in football but even then it's a fraction of fans.

Any professional loses their job for failing a drugs test, even outside of work hours.

Think people just need to be very wary of what they say. There's zero evidence of any kind in that talksport article, and the way it describes the person telling the story as 'a pal' is absolutely hilarious.

Just read my last post and saying none of this may of happened if David Coote did not signal advantage on a highly probable DOGSO is of course wrong because he didn't actually think it was a foul and was saved by Nunez putting the ball into the net but I still wondered if that sequence of play didn't happen or he called the decision correctly right away(by signalling advantage) then whether all this would come out.

That said, if the PGMOL was genuinely unaware this is how DC behaves away from the workplace then maybe it's a good thing for them in the long run. The guy does need help though if he does have some sort of addiction but his refereeing career is definitely over and as blunt as it sounds, he only got himself to blame.
