Not sure where 12 minutes added time came from in the Manchester City v Ipswich game but part was from two VAR reviews.

One was stopping play for an OFR a while after the incident. Time should be added on for reviews but is there anything explicit in the laws to make it clear that that means adding on the time between when the incident happened that is being reviewed and when the referee stops play?

The Ref Stop
Looking through the live reporting on BBC, in the second half there was - ten substitutions over eight separate substitution stoppages (with three Man City players going off injured, which I assume would have taken up more time), one caution (then two during added time), two goals (one a penalty which was given after a VAR check and OFR), and a goal disallowed for offside after a VAR check... without watching the entire half myself, 12 minutes doesn't sound particularly unrealistic.

I was at the game with a refereeing mate, and we said even with the VAR stoppage added we were only expecting 7-8 so the shock from the entire ground was pretty justified I'd say

My understanding is time from the incident to review is supposed to be added when a decision is changed, as that wasn’t valid game play. But I can’t point to a source.

I'm hoping someone on the forums is arsed to go back and add it all up

12 mins felt 5 or 6 too many
I did. Injuries plus subs 5 mins plus maybe a minute for goal celeb, and max 2 mins for each VAR. A generous 10. At least he didn't add on for further delays in added time!

4th officials are instructed they MUST keep a stoppage log detailing all times the game was stopped where time should be added on. They then tell the referee how much time they think should be added, and unless the referee disagrees that is what will go up on the board.

It is pretty much impossible for added time to be incorrect these days. I've actually been involved in a step 5 game where the manager who's team conceded a last second equaliser came in for a rant in the referee's changing room after. He was adamant too much time was played but once shown the stoppage log left with his tail between his legs, it is such an important tool.
