The Ref Stop

France v Morocco

Just saw Mbappe sit down in the centre circle and it made Morocco stop playing. Ref stopped the game and allowed Mbappe to be subbed. Then, Mbappe strolls off with no limp at all. Why are refs stopping the game if it's not a head injury ? (other than if you see a really bad one). Is it me ?

The Ref Stop
Giving strong vibes of the Kane penalty appeal against Congo and the Mbappe penalty not given despite VAR review earlier in the tournament, but I suppose the difference is, this was given on field, and I don't have an issue with that.

As well as Kane being more theatrical and earlier, and also in Mbappe’s incident, the defender made absolutely no contact with the ball & into the falling Mbappe, with very little or no complaints from the offender or his team-mates. I was surprised the length of time it took, but certainly was not a clear & obvious error from the original onfield decision & in real time looked a penalty & more so than Kane’s.

It's the reason why referees are more reluctant to stop play.

In general why wouldn't you want to stop play for an opposition injury if they had to go off for a minute?
Yes, it makes no difference what the two sides expect, if you stop a game for an injured player, the physio must be coming on (or player going off for treatment) and the player needs to leave the FOP for one minute either way. If that player is being subbed, then the sub needs to wait for a minute

I haven't read the new rules yet, so correct me if this is wrong. I realize the new rules are intended only to give us the tools to prevent players wasting time but this is exactly the type of scenario we'll be facing in a few weeks, but my initial understanding is someone is staying off for 1 minute and we're (as referee) are not responsible for the rules

@Big Cat If he's subbed then there is no 1 minute wait.
This caught me out as well , it will obviously be abused with rolling subs but they don't think of grassroots

Also the physio doesn't have to come on, as soon as the referee stops play for an injury then the player will have to go off unless subbed.

So OK player goes down, ref stops game and coaches think, 'right, get him subbed off quick to avoid being down to 10 for a minute'?
