The Ref Stop

US v Bosnia

My real issue is seeing this as SFP while Messi’s foul in the Algeria game - which had a measure of intent to it - wasn’t even cautioned. Had Messi been shown yellow as he should have been, I think the shouts of inconsistency and star treatment would have been far less.

That’s a feature of VAR, not a bug. Balogun only got “caught” via VAR. If VAR could recommend cautions, I expect Messi would have gotten one.

Have we actually seen what was shown to the R from VAR? I don’t recall seeing that the way we see with many leagues. The broadcast certainly showed slow mo and still, but do we actually know the R looked at it in slow motion rather than being shown the point of contact in a still and the play at full speed? I’ve seen it asserted a lot, but do we know that?

The Ref Stop
I don't know where I read this but broadcasters for the world cup are only allowed to show two replays of VAR review incidents. Also I don't recall seeing any screens as the referees sees it during OFR loke in the EPL. In true fashion of FIFA, they attempt to be the least transparent as possible to avoid revealing any mistakes. They don't seem to care about criticism or controversy. That's a biproduct of monopoly.

No ban will be served

Is this corruption?
It certainly is bad optics at the very least.

I thought the send off was harsh, but certainly defensible and absolutely nothing warranting an overturn of the standard one-match suspension. I’d be livid if I were the officials. Damaging to their credibility.

I'd fuming if was in the Belgian camp

Guarantee if it were an African player, or any other smaller nation, it would not have been overturned.
I genuinely think, unless an appeal is won because of wrongful dismissal, you shouldn't undermine refs.
Its been clear they accept he should be sent off as they haven't wiped it..
It really does stink of corruption by FIFA itself, along with Trump (sorry for bringing politics into it, but Trump has personally thanked FIFA for "overturning" his suspension).

What's the rules of the competition (the finals ?) Suspended for the next game, or not ?
12 red cards in the tournament.
11 have faced next game suspensions.
1 even got a longer ban.
1 got it suspended.
See the nation mix?

Even Ronaldo had 2 of his 3 games suspended so he could feature at the world cup after his red v Ireland.

South Africa 2
Qatar 2
Mexico 1
Bosnia & Herzegovina 1
Paraguay 1
Belgium 1
Iraq 1
Uruguay 1
Ecuador 1
United States 1

Thing is, the suspension hasn’t even been overturned, it’s been suspended. Which while less severe is actually worse, because it means they’re not saying the red card was incorrect, just that he doesn’t need to serve a ban unless he gets another
