The Ref Stop

Portugal v Croatia

Its quite frankly too late to reverse the severe damage done. The sport is now permanently maimed. Too many shortsighted loudmouths advocated for their ideal implementation of VAR as a fantasy and everyone utterly neglected the reality of how it will be applied—now everyone sees, and now everyone wants to finetune an unnecessary meddling tool that wasn't needed to begin with.

Realistic solution? Bring back the goalline AARs! They're still in the LoAF and they still have a realistic albeit slight chance of reappearing! And maybe this VAR nonsense which has undoubtedly brought everyone more headaches than relief can finally be put to bed.

Just another failed experiment from the IFAB and won't be the last.
Nobody is more outspoken about VAR than my good self (I'd stop nothing short of saying I hate it and hate is a strong word), but I don't agree that it won't last. Mainly because the stadia remain sold out at any price and TV rights have never been so lucrative. It's not you or I who have any say whatsoever regarding the future of the game, unless we collectively turned our backs on the game (which I have, to a large degree), so it makes no odds what we think because the collective is not following suit
As long as the club owners and those with a vested financial influence in the game remain supportive (and they will remain in favour), we're fooked

I don’t think AAR worked - imho they spent much of the time doing nothing or even duplicating the role of the AR.

I disagree. They certainly gave the impression of doing very little, because their primary rationale was simply to give comms input on penalty area decisions. Now that punters are way more used to the idea of comms, I think the idea might be better received. Regrettably though, as others have said, the VAR genie is firmly out of the bottle.

I’d happily switch back to AARs in a heartbeat, supplemented by coaches’ challenges which the main referee can rewatch on the pitch side monitors.

I agree to the latter in your final para.

I might even be fit enough to make it as an AAR. Not sure though, need to shuffle around a fair bit waving one's wand
