The Ref Stop

Celtic - Hearts

Would it be an error in law? - the LOTG state:
The fourth official indicates the minimum additional time decided by the referee at the end of the final minute of each half. The additional time may be increased by the referee but not reduced.
I concede.

Though (in my scenario) technically the error 'in law' would be by the 4O and not the referee.

Yes when looked at that way, but in the circs could also be looked at in that they were in the time period of that minute viz I can’t remember the actual stoppage time shown but let’s say 9 mins - they were in the 9th min & had passed the 8th min - so could say not reduced (I appreciate I am stretching it a tad), but we are only talking a matter of seconds and wouldn’t have affected the result in any shape or form even if Herts scored another goal.

"stretching it a tad . . ." 🤔😁

A quibble, but I guess they didn’t consult the guidelines for officials in the magic book before writing this?

“We note there has been speculation regarding the blowing of a final whistle. The Laws of the Game require the referee to signal the end of the match, but do not prescribe the method of that signal. “

LOTG:

The whistle is needed to:

start play (first and second half of normal play and extra time), after a goal

stop play:

for a free kick or penalty kick

if the match is suspended or abandoned

at the end of each half
Though the above is not actually contained within Laws of the Game 1-17, but in Guidelines to Match Officials. So I think technically, the SFA etc are correct, though perhaps not within the spirit of what should really have occurred.

Interesting* semi-related one today - with regards to indicated additional time - in the UEFA Women’s CL Final. Right on the stroke of 90:00 Barça made it 3-0. After Lyon kicked-off, the board went up with 7 on it.

Barcelona then made it 4-0, and final whistle went right after the restart with about 95:00 played.

Made me grin**

**Probably....

FotMob agrees with 5 added too.

It definitely said +7 on the UEFA overlay.

Mystery solved!

It did say 7 eventually but initially, just as the clock reached 90 minutes, it said 5.

After the game restarted, it changed to 7, as you show above. However before the game ended, it switched back again to 5.

So it looks like there was some kind of communications mix up over what the allowance for lost time was supposed to be?

It really doesn't matter whether they indicated 5 or 7, with the score at 4-0 in a cup final both teams would be perfectly happy with zero. Which is very different to the Celtic vs Hearts game as the argument there is it didn't actually finish and the referee blew before the minimum added time was up.

Oh I utterly agree, no one was expecting it to drag on, and it didn't warrant it at all.

However, Chas quoted Law:

Would it be an error in law? - the LOTG state:
The fourth official indicates the minimum additional time decided by the referee at the end of the final minute of each half. The additional time may be increased by the referee but not reduced.

Hence why I mentioned 7 (Seven) being indicated (turns out it WAS 5 and the graphic was an error).

What was it about not picking and choosing what Law to apply 🎣 😂
