Ok.. on that foul by Digne.
TV image showed a cut where a shin pad should/would be.
But was I seeing things when he managed to BEND the shin pad as if it was foam?! How is that protection?!

Was it DOGSO?
Yes. The keeper is removed from goal, but direction and distance, the ball speed going from the forward meaning chance of keeping possession... harsh.

Now seeing the offside goal there is an attacker in his eye line. Camera angle is deceiving - from the elevated view we can see it clearly. Be interesting to see a ground level shot. But we won’t because that doesn’t sell like Alan Shearer ranting.

I just find certain laws frustrating when it comes to reds and yellows (and sometimes no cards!).

This has been given as a red. Can support it. But I can definitely support a yellow.
But when I see the likes of a handball stopping a literal goal only being a yellow (the difference being the ball leading to handball was literally goal bound), whilst this one he has work to do just makes me question the motives of the laws.

VAR would have disallowed the goal & I think given red for Digne.

I think red for DOGSO is fine, that was the GK intent, the striker would have an empty goal, the GK on the halfway line.

in the spirit of the law it’s a definite red (and I’m a villa fan!) - he knows it’s either bring the striker down or possibly concede, not interested in the ball at all so even though it might not tick arbitrary notes for DOGSO, in the spirit of the game it’s a classic professional foul.

It's definitely DOGSO - direction of play is towards goal and the attacker would have regained control had it not been for the foul. He doesn't go "studs up" on his knee - it's the side of the boot that's making contact. Reckless trip, not SFP to me.

AR on this near side as the camera looks, is having a nightmare tonight.

Glad the goal came from that free kick as it’s a bit of a bail out but that was so poor.

First one understandable, second one no way. Needs to focus and put it out of his mind. Cant drop referee in it a third time.

Assistant should have seen that better.
But even Chris Kavanagh should have known that was inside. It was so blatantly obvious to see.

Haven't seen it but the DOGSO has to denied to the fouled player not his team, this may change next season...

I'm tempted to bookmark this page and then refer back to it whenever people say we don't need VAR

4 KMDs and 3 wrong isn't a good look. I do wonder if they were told about the offside goal at half time and that has hit their confidence, it shouldn't but I've certainly been there where you drop a clanger then the harder you try to put it right the more mistakes you make. I also wonder if not working with his usual team has had an impact on it. The offside is clearly on the AR, but there's also an argument that the ARs were more culpable on the missed red card and missed penalty than Kavanagh.

For me the red card was more SFP than DOGSO but either were fine, it was going wide and there were covering defenders but there was no keeper. I've always said that I feel challenges where there is zero attempt to play the ball should be sanctioned as SFP, even more so when the contact is on the opponent's knee.

Somewhat ironically Shearer has been one of the most vocal critics of VAR, saying we should get rid of it, yet here he now is laying into the officials for making mistakes.

Shearer was correct in that its more the assistant at fault rather than chris kavanaugh but I’m sure he would have had a moan either way. This game does show why we need VAR

I still don't get the fall back argument as the majority of key decisions are made on field rather than via a VAR review. No official is going to see that handball and think they need help, rather for whatever reason they just haven't seen it properly. Having seen the replay I can kind of understand why Kavanagh missed it, he was very central and possibly had a player blocking his view, but the AR just has to see it.

It has been confirmed as DOGSO.

As I said earlier, the vast majority of KMDs are made on pitch without VAR intervention, which kind of blows a hole in any argument that officials rely on VAR. it is just that those given on-pitch don’t draw as much attention, especially as they are deemed as being correct because VAR didn’t say otherwise.
