Pretty needless challenge from Nunez

The Ref Stop
Yeah, he is lucky there. Had Lewis Smith gone red I don't think VAR would be getting involved, but equally I'm not sure it quite meets the threshold for VAR to say that the caution was a C&O error and recommend a review.

I dont think the majority of the wider football audience expect a red card there, despite the fact I absolutely see the argument for it!

I think Lewis had a good game although he was harsh on Southampton maybe for the first penalty. Nunez whilst mostly brainless it seems was right to get a yellow here I think. His challenge was from the side with his thigh hitting the player. Considering the studs in challenges that the Arsenal player got sent off for and then was successfully appealed this is nothing like as dangerous a challenge as that.

I listened to the game live and from the commentary I expected a real hack and swing.

Seeing it on MoTD, it’s a different challenge to the one described. It’s more of a very aggressive trip, and his body shape is more akin to a passing motion than a full on blast. That would’ve been into the red category for me. But yellow is right I feel.

I seen it from two angles.

Now factor in the response from the other players. As a non ref. It’s a red.

Take the reaction out of the equation and see it from the front or side and not from the rear. It is a yellow.

Was there serious intent to cause harm? No.

Was there intent to stop momentum? Yes. Albeit out of frustration.

VAR took a long time to view this, I suspect if we ever hear the audio they were close to advising a red otherwise they would have quickly dismissed the check for SFP.

Was a noticeable delay for the restart & Nunez was a worried man! 😟

(Hero) Mike Dean reckons the Sotton goal was offside. I can't find a reverse angle. Presumably he did see more angles. My suspicion is the ball played the scorer onside when it was poked through from underneath Allison. But a better angle might show otherwise. Dean convinced VAR missed it.

Nunez looks like a yellow from other angles. Handball pen was nailed on. The other pen was very soft IMHO but... seen them given.

I thought the Southampton player came in behind Alisson and poked it across which would have meant that the scorer was offside. There was only the keeper between the ball and the goal so not two defenders, but I can see why it was easily missed as it happened in chaotic circumstances.

There was also a lot of pushing and shoving afterwards, and while I don't know how relevant it is, the on-screen graphic that showed while the check was underway showed clips from the handbags rather than replays of the challenge. My assumption when I watched a replay of this entire section was that's where the VAR was checking, the challenge itself just seemed textbook yellow to me.

I was the same - when I saw it, I presumed there was another challenge to come.

It's a stupid challenge that you could see coming, obviously born completely out of frustration but not a red for me.
