I'm 500% sure it's a red. If he did the same tackle standing there would still be a case for a red.

He doesn't 'slide' in - he launches himself. He's only JUST landing when he hits the opponent. Studs first in a position that blocks the follow-through of the player's kick is incredibly dangerous.

How do you tackle without being studs first ?

No one think Robertson’s rugby tackle on Sterling should have been a penalty? Nailed on for me

I couldn't have had a better view of this, didn't look like much to me. Thought sterling tried to cut inside, they both grab each other then fall over.

I think the replays look more like a pen but sterling definitely gets his hands all over Robertson before going down.

That was my instinct watching it too. Sterling grabbed hold of Robertson, fell and made sure the defender was tangled up and came down with him. I'm not going to go as far as calling it a dive or trying to con the referee, but having lost possession, he made sure the referee had to at least have a think about it.

He doesn't 'slide' in - he launches himself. He's only JUST landing when he hits the opponent. Studs first in a position that blocks the follow-through of the player's kick is incredibly dangerous. The only thing protecting Salah was that he didn't have a full follow-through on the kick - but positioning studs in a manner that's likely to cop the full force of the opponent's kick must be a red card. The fact that he launched himself in a high challenge makes it worse - as does the fact that it was so hard he ended up about 2 yards past the opponent.

This is a nasty tackle. Yes, Salah was rolling on the ground pretending he was hurt, but that's not the issue. I'm genuinely amazed anybody is considering anything other than red.
He's saved by the fact that Salah mostly gets out of his way IMO. Because of the evasive action, Kompany's high boot only clips the bottom of his foot and it looks like fairly minor incidental contact. If Salah keeps his foot on the floor, then it becomes a studs-first contact into the side of his shin - and for a ball that's rolling along the floor as well!

For a defender of Kompany's quality, when it was entirely possible to win that ball by sliding along the floor, that's a terrible challenge. Because of the evasive action it becomes a slightly tricky one to give (and we can't ignore the fact that Kompany thinks he's got that spot on as well, you can see he's surprised it's even given as a foul!), but I think modern referees should still be expected to get the red card out there.

Kompany needs putting out to grass, he’s a walking card these days... His best days are behind him like attackers!

What on earth are you rabbiting on about????
It's not a good idea to tackle like a ballet dancer. There are times when the studs are showing
Ref has to take all things into account and studs showing is just one factor with regards to endangering safety. I'm yet to see the Kmpany challenge in real time, but at looked to have the SFP signature all over it

Kompany red for me. Endangering the safety?? If he makes contact with the Liverpool player with the full force of his weight that could be a possible serious injury.
The fact that he didnt makes no difference.

I'm really struggling to see how any referee can say that Kompany's challenge wasn't worthy of a red card. It ticked all of the boxes.

Saved me posting the same.
It could be shown to new refs as the definition of SFP.
It's so far into the red zone. What more do. Some people want?

Yes, commentators instantly brushed it off, but it looked a pen to me. It's amazing how commentators influence opinion, if they made a big deal of it, everyone would be talking about how it should have been a pen.

Unless they'd seen it...
Looked dodgy in real time. Clearly not a pen on replay

In real time during the match, I thought AT got it right with a RC. Highlights & replays show a wrong decision, VAR would have resulted in his sending off. Could he have been influenced by Salah's history of "Oscar quality acting" for offences?

In his own words...... "I thought it was a great challenge, was it not? I got the ball, a little bit of the man but it wasn't naughty," the 32-year-old Belgium international said. "I didn't try to injure him. It was that or let him go through on goal."
