I find that just blowing the whistle does the trick for me. No idea what these threads are all about TBH
As long as it doesn't sound like a rugby, umpire or pea whistle, I ain't bovered. Oh, except Molteen style fingergrip works better than other ideas for me
I’ll bite
Regularly refereeing at venues with multiple games I like to have a different or distinctive tone to the other pitches. That’s my main reason for having something other than the Fox 40, as trusty as it is.

Bought a Valkeen in my early days (lost it) but figured it had been a waste of money as the cheap whistles aren't much different
My Fox has a FAMOA badge on it so I'm figuring it must be 'The Business'

True. But, I do quite enjoy watching a player wince when the ting goes off and they just happen to be within radius of the centre circleAgree, unless you are refereeing in a big stadium I really don't see the fascination with spending money on fancy whistles. Never once has a player or manager said "you've got a really good sounding whistle ref, well done", so as long as you don't sound like a PE teacher with a pea whistle it really doesn't matter.
As the saying goes, it isn't what you've got it's what you do with it
As AR I've noticed even in small stadiums (50-100 fans) some referees struggle to be loud enough. If you've got a mouthy GK or boisterous fans, you don't want to be causing yourself even more trouble if your whistle isn't strong or "expressive" enough to clearly help communicate decisions to them.
Just to note folks.... don't drop a Fox 40 into boiling water to clean it.

thats a new slant on the post, what happens?
I have a thing for binning my whistles the very first time i dont like the sound, so would never consider cleaning them, so, tips for cleaning, do and dont?
Dilwe knock-off arrived this morning from the 'Amazon'. Looks identical to Valkeen. Probably sounds identical an'all... Shame I won't be able to test it for a few months. I'm on my holidays
I think it was trying to turn itself back into a flat sheet of plastic basically the sides started to lift up - think 'DeLorean' and you're on the way!
Never been a finger grip fan, but I couldn't even work out how to attach the bugger haha. Straight in the bin
After having used the finger grip for a little over 2 years, I don't know what I'd do without it. I can't imagine using a wrist lanyard and I wouldn't want to go back to holding the whistle just in my hand because I'd often end up half covering a hole and making an ungodly sound when I blow. Still, getting the thing on with the ring that they give you is a pain. It took me multiple tries over multiple days.

Yeah, it's what I've done with two Fox 40s, and I did try it with my Valkeen for a while but I found that the length wasn't exactly right and I still ended up semi-covering a hole when I blew.
