refs have not practiced for 20 years using their judgement while watching a TV in front of 80,000 fans.

The alternative being referees training 20 years to be a puppet for the real referee sat in a VAR studio. It's a slippery slope, it's important that the man in the middle, on the pitch, makes the important decisions.

I wonder if there'd be less dissent if the main referee was watching the match on a TV screen and the centre ref acted as his assistant.

As the 'TV screen' for UK matches is always in Stockley Park (Near Heathrow) the answer is probably yes!
