The Ref Stop
In terms of referee related, the new referee kit has a real version that wasn't initially advertised when the kit was released as well as a currently unseen pink version

Wow!

That seems harsh by the BBC to put Darren Cann out live and to be challenged by Mr Rooney. I hope Darren ups his confidence and challenges back.

A really awkward place to be as he builds his on screen persona.

Totally agree with what he said. 👏👏

Also refereeing related for the WC, it's a shame to see Michael Oliver has picked up an injury meaning him and his AR's have been replaced for the Ivory Coast vs Ecuador game. Hopefully he has a speedy recovery and it isn't the end of his tournament.

“Makkelie was ordered to the monitor by video assistant referee Carlos del Cerro Grande to review the play. Makkelie eventually overturned the yellow on Ream, instead booking Almirón for simulation, justifying the “mistaken identity” definition.”

Hmm… how is Collina gonna take that?
Sounds like a law error to me. Haven’t seen the clip yet.

Just woken up and seen this. Weirdly, despite the fact they did end up getting to the right decision in the end, that’s the wrong decision for me as it sets a dangerous precedent where they’ve effectively reviewed a standard yellow card.

Definitely the right decision (blatant dive)

Absolutely wrong in law

Edit...

Apparently one of FIFA's new laws allows VAR to intervene when a player is shown a yellow or red card, but the offence for which the card was shown was committed by another player of either team

still not sure that applies here?

It’s not mistaken identity. It’s an incorrect decision. Really not sure that’s VAR reviewable, although the public will support it

I have it on relatively good authority that MO had a very minor issue, passed a fitness assessment but Collina chose not to risk it. Should be all good to continue in the tournament.

Also a bit concerning that play had already restarted with the Paraguay free kick, then after it was headed away Makkelie blew up for the VAR review. Definitely not correct in law...
