Darlow almost ran out of time again I noticed not long afterwards.
I do have to ask though, how can Gillett view the penalty at the monitor and not think the penalty for a boot to the head is not a yellow card(at least) I will never know.
I was surprised the penalty needed to go to VAR and wasn’t at least a yellow. Probably should’ve been stopped a lot sooner too.
Great decision with the final penalty shout though. Looked a blatant pen until you see the replays
Honesty at this point it feels like they just default to no PK and let VAR look at it vs making a fantastic refereeing decision

I dont think it was a corner though. Not 100% sure Leeds player even touched it but I definitely thought I saw a touch after the challenge by Spurs player before it went out.
I was thinking the same thing. So imagine VAR intervenes to give a goal kick (which is coming in the World Cup) instead of a corner and the ref gives the VAR signal and points for a goal kick but his announcement is drowned out by a roaring Spurs stadium who thinks he's pointing to the spot.
The protocol on The IFAB website just says they can review a "clearly incorrectly awarded corner kick if the decision can be changed immediately and without delaying the restart (competition option)".
It also says they can't change the decision if the corner is taken quickly.
We'll find out at the world cup how that will actually work but I think as long as it's done quickly they can check/change any wrong corner decision.

They will check every non-obvious corner decision and will take as long as they need to. If there's doubt there is no way they will allow a quick one.
What it may change is that for 50/50 decision you would give it as a corner on field rather than normally going with the 'safe' goal kick.

My understanding is corner kicks or goal kicks can only change if the restart has NOT been taken already. I also understand the wording means the referee does not delay taking the restart so that VAR can check it. The problem I see with this, for close calls, I see teams rushing to take the restart quickly so the VAR doesn't change it and give it to opponents. This can also be a good thing.
The worst outcome will be referees asking players not to take the restart so that VAR can check it.

Or one of the opposition will conveniently need to do his shoelaces up or stand in the way stop it being taken so they have time to check
