The Ref Stop

Situations That Have Never Happened To You

Be interested to hear about the game(s) you had to abandon due to less than 7 players for a team. The closest I've come to was a team starting with eight and I had to reluctantly send one of them off for DOG handball.
It’s happened twice. First time around 25 years ago. Mass confrontation which ended up with 9 red cards.
Second time was last season.
Player sent off in the first half, used all 3 named subs at half time, then 4 players got injured leaving them with 6

I may or may not have got on the scoresheet as a referee too. Had 2 attempts, reffing a tournament and one team were the whipping boys. Told both teams beforehand that if the opportunity came up I’d be having a go. Corner comes across, edge of the 18 yard box, sits up perfectly begging to be hit. Rattled the cross bar, was gutted! But later scored a header from another corner. Was the only goal this team scored in the whole tournament. 🤣

Mine were both unintentional - a header from halfway after a clearance struck me to lob the goalkeeper (U10s).

And another well of target shot striking me on the left thigh changing direction and flicking in off the post. If I tell you I was correctly positioned for 999/1000 situations that will tell you how wide the shot was going.

Never had goalie handle in 6yd box from a back pass leading to IDK from 6 yards with 11 players on the goal line.... like what happened at Ipswich a few weeks ago....

My money would have definitely been on some kind of deliberate "injuries" after starting with 8 or 9 players to skirt league rules that punish failing to field which happens a lot around here, but surprised to see the actual outcome!

Been appointed to referee a cup final. And I started in 1999.

Stepped in once as referee pulled out *on the walk out to the pitch*. Arrogant t*****r turned up injured and tried to blag it anyway before quitting at the last possible moment.
Okaaaay this aged incredibly well

Just had a Full Time notification telling me I’ve got the middle of the U16s League Cup final at Stadium:MK next Saturday

😁

I've never kept a record of all my games although wish i had. Anyway, to my knowledge, in approx 150 games (all formats) across the last 4 years, i have never sent someone off for a second yellow card offence.

TBH it's something I'm lowkey proud of. I don't fear throwing cards around and I do carry a red...! The red has had a reasonable amount of usage but always been DOGSO / SFP. So i like to tell myself it's down to my man / game management.

Is the "appointments officer" on this forum? 😉

Took a long time - well over 100 games - before I had my first nil - nil game.

They remain remarkably rare.

500+ matches in and I still haven't had anyone chuck the ball directly in from a throw-in.

I did have one first this season: disallowing a goal for a penalty taker touching the ball twice (scoring a header) after his initial shot hit the bar.

I don’t think so. But you never know!
It feels as though s/he is, and just noticed a deseved appointment is long overdue after reading the posts. Or at least brought to his/her attention by someone who is here 😊. Enjoy.

Do you know what is absolutely surreal. I just checked my super anal excel sheet for 0-0 games.

I had none in my first two seasons. My first and only 0-0 game came this season and I was an AR.

I just never thought that was the case.

This thread is going in all directions. Not that I mind. It's started with relatively common things (the ones that you would expect to have come across ) we haven't had. We are now at rare things we haven't had.

- I have had double touch of a penalty after a cross bar bounce in a penalty twice. One as centre which I called and one as far side AR that the centre didn't call. My flag was waving like it was in a hurricane because I had seen a whole game replayed because it wasn't called.
- Never had a corner kick double touch after bouncing off the post.
- Have had goals (not) scored directly off an IFK multiple times.
- Never had a penalty taken touching the ball twice on the kicking action (slipping etc and touching both feet....)
- In the old days, never had the ball leaving the PA after a goal kick but wind blowing it back in for keeper to touch it again, but had seen it in a game I was watching.
- Have had a goal scored off kick off once and have had numerous failed attempts.
