Sin bins

The Referee Store
Pretty sure they're being trialled in a few leagues this year and then as of next season they are going to be used in all grassroot games and some other adult leagues?

Are sin bins use by every county FA in the country? Any tips for administering them?

Get yourself 22 watches, so that you can time each player on and off the field of play. Strap them the length of each arm - one team on each. Short sleeved ref shirt might be best, for easy viewing and access. May need more watches if you wish to include subs.

Hope that tip is of use. Enjoy !

They are administered the same way as you would any other yellow card with the addition of sending them to the bin and let player/replacement back on after 10 minutes if applicable according to the chart below.

1. Stop play if not already stopped.
2. Given sin-bin is for dissent, manage situation to calm things down if you have to
3. Isolate player and get player details. My case is shirt number only but you would probably need name too.
4. Show player the yellow card and point to the sin bin area with both hands.
5. Write player details AND time of game in your notebook as you would with any caution only the code is different. Make a mental note of the time.
6. In cases where player/replacement is allowed back on (chart below), when 10 minutes have passed (plus any stoppage time if you don't stop your watch for stoppages), allow the player/replacement back on. This can be done when ball is in play.

In practice you won't have more than two players in the bin at once. I have had two in the bin only once in a whole season. Recording of time in your book allows you to track the ten minutes.
