The Ref Stop
It's a very very very sad state of affairs.

Unfortunately I doubt any witnesses would come forward to the Police, and I can't see the FA doing anything meaningful if they can't identify the culprit.

The only thing they can do to affect these players is if the referees on the league went on strike for a while. I'm sure the players would love for all their games to get postponed due to having no match officials.

I hope he makes a speedy recovery, and that people do come forward to help.

Get well soon ref.

Think my attitude would have got me in bother even more quickly, first one to call me that would have walked.....

Disgraceful!

Agree with Zara, FA should grow a pair and ban both sides indefinitely. There's 22 players, subs, coaches and spectators out there that know exactly what happened and who did it, hopefully someone's guilty conscience will prompt them to do the right thing!

A'holes like this shouldn't be allowed near a football pitch again, after spending an extended duration in a small room at her majesty's...

Issuing yellow cards for players being abusive towards him?

Whilst I have nothing but best wishes for this ref's recovery..in the back of my head I can't help wondering that if referees took a firmer line towards the abuse players dish out, then maybe, just maybe, players wouldn't have such a strong reaction when they are confronted by a referee who isn't prepared to tolerate their abuse.

Nothing this referee did, or didn't do, justifies the cowardley despicible violence he suffered.......I hope they ban both teams sine die until someone has the testicular fortitude to either own up or point the finger so the guilty party can be dealt with.

I think banning both clubs would send out the right message, but we all know that won't happen.

Even one instance of this happening is too much, but, are referee assaults a common issue?

In my short career I've never hand anything other than verbal abuse, which obviously isn't acceptable, but I've never even thought that I might be assaulted.

How do the FA tackle it? I know players reported and found guilty can get a sine die ban, but what action, if any, is taken against the clubs?

Have to agree with @Padfoot.

Just one point, the police spokesman said "a man was hit on the back of the head by another man". Now i am no Sherlock Holmes but judging by his face i think he may have received more than a hit to the back of the head.

Get well soon and dont let the bar stewards grind you down!!

Absolute disgrace, a mate of mine got badly beaten up during a game and ended up leaving it, strangely to become a head of security at a football ground? However, I think the two clubs involved with this should both be banned until someone is held responsible. Hope he makes a full recovery and it doesn't put him off.

I appreciate that we all have different tolerance levels, but until they have a zero tolerance of swearing from youth up the situation won't change and last week's ref will let them get away with it.

Both teams banned this is highly unacceptable. If no one comes forward it is a travesty. Any abuse should be straight red espeicially the c word.
But Ithink the end result would have been the same. I hope Bedfordshire FA comment about this and say what punishments they are going to hand out. Get well soon

Just been on Bedfordshire FA home page and had a route around, no mention of the event. There should be condemnation of this event their spokesman should be there supporting this poor man, lack of comment from the beds FA is very worrying, they should be out in support of this ref and been seen to be doing something

As it's an on going Police investigation they may be unable to comment until that's been finished.

Also, advertising the fact a referee in their county got knocked out at a match isn't good publicity.
