Reflecting on a recent sending off for serious foul play in 35th minute.
During an attacking play, a long ball was played over the top. The forward chased the ball but was unlikely to reach it before the keeper. Nonetheless, the forward continued to pursue the ball, going to ground while the keeper caught the ball after a few bounces. The forward then collided with the keeper with a raised leg and studs around the thigh area. I blew the whistle for a free kick, checked on the keeper, and called for treatment. I isolated the forward and calmed the players down. After about 3-4 minutes, the keeper was happy to continue. This gave me ample time to think, and I decided to send off the forward for serious foul play. The forward claimed he slipped, and other players insisted he wasn't that sort of player. The forward's team captain protested too much and was subsequently sin-binned. The game restarted with a direct free kick. Players and supporters claiming I was making the game all about me as I walked off at halftime.
Any advice on how others would deal with this situation?
