hi guys can anyone tell me if the select group refs are wearing new watches this season, it doesnt look like anthony taylor and micheal oliver are wearing polar heart monitors tonight

The Ref Stop
cant read french but the watch looks usless for refereeing, and why are the referees not wearing heart rate monitors anymore

The data is not useful during the game, may have a system which collects data for analysis off pitch not needing a watch.

the downloadable app must be relevant to the job ... i cant seem to find a screenshot of it in action but i'd imagine its similar to spintso?

and they cant be used as a stopwatch during the game, really useless piece of kit
My understanding from the article is that the watch is a smart watch. The Premier League have then developed an app in partnership with TAG Heuer and the PGMOL which provides all of the functions the V800's were doing (distance, speed, time, etc.).

I mean...I'm about to buy a smart watch and I'd love an app that works for refereeing, but I don't see how any of that needs a special £1200 watch!

Has to be a lucrative sponsorship deal I suspect, as the Polar V800 is widely regarded as the best sports / HR / GPS watch on the market.

i just think these new watches will be as usful as a wodden whistle

I don't see why they would be useless. I assume that between the select group referees and tag heur they are capable of creating anew application that does what they want.

There are already smart watch apps that integrate with heart rate monitors and GPS.

If they aren't using the app to records cards etc then it wouldn't be too difficult for them to get a usable app up and running.

That's not to say I'd be running out to buy one, I'm happy with my v800

What makes you think that? The article makes it quite clear they have all the required features for refereeing as part of a custom-designed app developed specifically for use by the PGMOL.

For instance, here is a YouTube video which shows it being used as a stopwatch, among other things:

I use a smart watch, did so all last season. Refereeing is getting with the times, where technology takes a lead role. Spintso PDA on one arm, Smartwatch on the other.

I've noticed that TAG Heuer are sponsoring the on-screen clock on televised PL games whether on BT or Sky, so it does look very much like the use of the watch is part of an overall PL sponsorship package.

I've just bought a smart watch and am keen to integrate it into my refereeing. Do you just use it as a stopwatch or are there other apps/uses you'd recommend?

I spoke with a PGMOL referee recently who informed me a bit about this a few weeks back.

Basically TAG Heuer came to them and said 'What would you like'. The PGMOL referees basically said a stop and a start function, but TAG Heuer were insistent on going overboard. The watches have alsorts of apps built into them, Google Maps etc. When they started sticking all this in the PGMOL referees went with it and asked "Can it have a heart rate monitor built in" and "Can it have goal-line technology built in." Both responses were no but that they'll work on it for next season. Basically, due to them not wanting to wear a shed load of different watches, they've stopped wearing the wrist HR monitors. The watch has a load of stuff they don't want, and doesn't have a load of stuff they want. Hopefully they stick to their plans for next season and integrate HR monitoring and GLT.

I use an app called RefCard (Android). It records goals, subs, heart rate, steps and cards. Counts up, counts down and has a voice recording function. It's still in Beta mode as they can't get the timer to operate correctly (surely, it's simple?). Basically, as you begin the second half it goes a bit weird. It sorts itself out at around 60 minutes. I don't use it for the time though, spintso is good enough for that. Well, I don't take much notice of it between 45-60 mins. The other functions work well.

There are more apps out there for both IOS and Android :)
