One thing not yet mentioned (as part of your pre-match "spiel") is always remember to finish whatever you say with "Okay guys, can you think of anything Ive missed out or have either of you got any questions for me?"
Two-way communication is what it's all about.

This is really good advice: the pregame is when, as team captain, you set the tone for how your team is going to play today. If you want to be a team on the field, you have to set that standard from the start. (I'm fortunate to only do games with three man teams--the teamwork is what makes it fun for me. I don't know that I'd still ref if I was out there doing games solo.)
