During a match this afternoon I heard a player go up to a team mate and say “take her out”, her team mate look confused. The player then continued “you know the one, slide her” the team mate smiled, then nodded and walked away. I spent the rest of the match then waiting for a bad challenge to go in on someone but fortunately it never came.

So this left me with 2 questions:

1. Is simply hearing this enough to warrant a card to the player who suggested it?
2. If the team mate did take them out my view is that it would have been a red for endangering the safety of an opponent as this would have been a targeted attempt to take a player out of the game, would I be correct in saying this or would it still be dependent on the nature of the challenge?

If you hear something like that I'd suggest getting the captain over, pointing out what you have heard, and making it clear that you will deal with anything that happens subsequently.

If a challenge did subsequently come in you would still have to judge it on its merit, although I suspect any benefit of doubt would be significantly reduced.

I reckon a quick "you know I can hear that" is a good way to let them know you are listening. Raise your profile etc.

Definitely mention it to the captain and say you’ll punish the next one. I had an incident when I was senior AR on Saturday where I heard a coach say “go down and pretend you are injured”. There were 5 left with that side winning 1-0. When I said say that out of my earshot next time, it was comical how quickly the player got up. Sometimes all it needs is a gentle reminder.

I actually gave a card for that last week.
Player had been challenged and he appealed for a free kick. Nothing given.
He got up, angrily, and then proceeded to chase (and lose) the player before shouting to his team mate to "take the f**ker out".
Quite loud and obvious.
No one complained.

Obvious easy USB that can't be ignored. Well done, and I hope every other referee would do the same.
